I am looking to buy my first ever Land rover ..Its a Defender SWB Pickup ..just a 2 seater , however its got 140,000 miles on the clock !!!! ...is that as bad as it sounds …?

You really need to give a lot more info before anybody will commit any meaningful comments about that.
And pics. Have you seen it and looked under it/ took it for a drive?

If it £100 buy now:)

It depends on how it’s been looked after and what condition it’s in. Also, what engine is in it?
As said above, more info required for a better reply to your question but generally, mileage is one of the lesser concerns......

Sounds perfect for me, so long as it's about £250 or less right now!

Mileage doesn't matter, state of the chassis, axles, bulkhead and drive train count for a lot more ... the state of the body might be a concern, but 'everything' on a Landy is replaceable, at home!!

Mine is 31 years old with 150,000 on the clock. The engine isn't original nor are the doors, or tub, or the seats..........
The chassis is good though :)
It depends on so many things and your skill level in fixing it!!

200/300tdis and td5s are capable of quite stratospheric mileage if they're looked after. As said go on general condition, it might not be the original engine in any case. Could actually be less or more...

You really ought not worry about mileage, it means nothing on a Land Rover (excluding the car like offerings from the D3 to the Ewok and full fat Range Rovers).

You should be far more concerned with rust and previous owner bodges.

If I were you I'd be looking to ask a forum member who knows a bit to come looking at one with you, it could save you a fortune if you were to buy a pig dressed up like a prom queen.

Sure is nice on the outside! How does the chassis look? I did a hpi check on mine even though it was only £3300 and a lot older than yours :)
If the various known areas are good and the price is right for you, follow your instincts but take a friend as emotions run high with these things!!

As everyone else has said above, condition is everything, mileage is essentially irrelevant with proper maintenance...

Got any pics of the underneath ?

+1 all the above. Mines a 98 300 tdi, had about the same mileage when I got her last year and I've had few problems really. Reckon it's a TD5? What's the history like? Regular maintenance is key.
Good luck btw, she looks a peach ;)

That looks bang on, so maybe £300 and I'll collect it tomorrow .. :)

As said, still need checking underneath, much gloss can hide much dross ..

I can see why you like it on first impression, looks tidy (far to clean).
But being that clean on top “assumes” the owner looked after it all over. Please dont assume that and take a good look. As has been said all those shiny bits bolt on a piece that can get very rusty on some and can become a car killer.
Gets some pics of the underneath and you will get some pointers for guys on here as to where to check again or something that don’t look right.
Mileage has already been covered you need ask for a bit of history, to help decide if it’s a lot or not.

You have still not said how much.

I would up my first bid and say £400) only because I could do with a nice set of summer road tyres and wheels:);) @Paul D stop trying to spend you first weeks wage already :) (congrats on the job)

Agreed. Plus it's missing the engine "type" decals - tis a bit of a giveaway that it has had a respray - hence looking clean...

I.E. too clean

Well I must say from those pics it looks like it’s in good condition under there. Did you tap it cos it sure looks like it should sound clean.
Pic 3 not sure that panel should finish like that ?
If the rest of the underneath looks like that, I am sure a welded patch would stick out like a sore thumb.
Pic 1. Along the top? Sprayed over rust or mud? Even if it rust it does not look like an issue.
Can see it has had a paint job as a lot of green haze underneath.
So engine history? We’re your questions answered?
Did you look under the floor mats?
And you still haven’t given away the price so I am suspecting it’s going to be too rich for me now.

Anyway I am sure there will be guys along to ask many more question before you can decide if the price is too much or not:eek:( think that’s correct)
