Hi all, would there be much involved in fitting a TD5 engine and bulkhead to this 1986 machine?

Would it be straight forward enough, I don't want to end up trying to weld on mounts etc..
Bulkhead is not pretty but the chassis appears reasonable from pics......

Wow that's a bulkhead past it's best. Any reason you're wanting a td5 over a tdi? I'm guessing a td5 is way more complex. A 200tdi will drop straight in. I've owned a td5 and 200tdi 110. Both tuned or mapped. Performance was similar. You'll need a new transfer box also as no doubt it will have a 1.667
 
Reason for TD5 is that I have one almost sourced.........

I personally wouldn't go the TD5 route. A 200 tdi is much easier to fit and get on with. And the 200tdi just seems to keep rolling along with very little maintenance required. I wouldn't change my 200 tdi.

It is possible, of course it is possible, but you are really going to need to weld mounts on though, what is that currently, a 2.5NA? It will have the diagonal faced mounts, and the TD5 will want a flat sort of channelled mount for the mounting rubber to sit on. Some people get big plates made up with the mount on it, then a big plate for the outside of the chassis rail and then bolt new mounts on but if you are going to get them cut and welded up you are better to just weld some mount onto the chassis!

What is this TD5 out of? Def or Disco?

It is also possible to connect the ECU up to your existing dash lights but you will need to pick a disused one for the MIL for example. That is if you are going to keep the speedo from the transfer box as is, failing that go the full hog on the instruments but it does mean doing quite a few mods and changes there too.

Thanks all for replies. TD5 is from a 2002 Defender and all the bits are there. The 1986 chassis is over 30yrs old so, in Ireland, that qualifies for 'Classic Tax'. If I could marry the two together it would be an ideal weekend motor. From reading the ad it has a non running petrol engine fitted at the moment. I was hoping the engine mounts would be somewhat similar and wouldn't have to do too much fettling. I'll have to put more thought into it and see if it's still a worthwhile venture.............
