Looking good. What are your other plans for it? I carried out a similar task a while back. Picked up a ex MOD 110 to tidy up and upgrade. I'm loving it - My thread here for any tips -

Lucifus 110 build

Yep saw your thread and it kind of inspired me, planning more comfy seats and maybe PAS, repaint the tub and interior and that's it for the mo!

I have got I where I want it mechanically, I just need to sort my rear x-member before I do anything else, that and a 5p sized hole in the footwell is all the rust on it.

Cheers

Ed

Stop worring about your cross member, 10 minutes work to sort out.
On the subject of your ammunition , if fluffy dice hanging from the front mirror are signs of virility, what does two blanks hanging from the rear signify?

Ok cheers guys, best get some fluffy dice then!!!

Local garage have said they will do it for an hours labour, prep, weld and finish. I am just going to do that!

Cheers

Ed

Yeah I am going to jenolite the areas, get a plate welded over the hole then plan and budget for further repair or x-member replacement in a couple years.

I *could* afford a new rear x-member from black sheep now but it will clear out the landy budget lol

Hmm need to think hard

Ed

Ok finding these online (not mine) photos of a rear x-member being plated has reassured me somewhat that plating will be ok for now. (Sorry you have to click the links - the person flickr wont allow embedding of images)

Mine is no way as bad as that.

Garage tuesday for an opinion. In the meantime I am going to jenolite the bad bits i can get to and paint over the top of them, same with the outside areas..

Interesting thread, keep it coming.
I've just bought a Def 90 on Saturday & am really hoping to find some ammo/history when I give it a good clean over Easter.
I may also have a little play bwith the soft top to see how long it takes to take off.

soft top takes about 5 mins to get off once you have practised!

To make mine quicker:

- I replaced the nuts where it attaches to the roll bar with wing nuts so i can take them off by hand.

- replace all the bottom cords with 8mm bungee with loops tied in the ends (dont replace the over the rear door cord)

- then its just a case of undoing the straps, and the 2 x 13mm bolts that hold the rear stick down then lift out the metal work, undo the clips on the top of the windscreen and the top comes off.

On mine i have to do drop the middle hoop stick to get it in my garage, i am thinking about grinding down the slots where the rear hoop slots into to give me an extra 2 cm clearance. I need to measure up before i do this.

Ed

p.s. poke your x-member really hard, i didnt poke mine hard enough when buying and now i have found rust on one part of it. With hindsight i could have used that to bargain and get some money off - i probably slightly over paid but hey nevermind. live and learn!

Ok sorted out the ratty dash today

Went from this

to this
DSCN2825Medium.jpg

Also gave the interior a bit of a clean (after the photo) and wiped over every surface.

Found a 5p sized rust hole in the drivers footwell, and the windscreen wiper motor housing has rusted away at the bottom so those have been added to the to-do list.

Ed
Aw Flat that black and Nasty tape is history mate! Thats how we squadies keep the Army marching and everthing from landies to Challenger tanks rolling lol:(:hysterically_laughi. But she's looking good mate:)

Yeah. I debated whether to or not :-D but as it was self peeling I decided it had to go!

Don't worry I'm sure there is more somewhere, probably holding the chassis together

Got distracted from mowing the lawn today and took my door tops off, just to check I could really. Found a bit of electrolytic corrosion on 1 so sorted that. Drivers door top has a slight crack in the upright aswell, its ok now but may need sorting eventually.

Then I took off the 2 side supports and mounts for the roll bar. These are a bit rusty and needed a tidy. Rest of roll bar will be down in the next week or 2.
rollbar1Small.jpg

Gave them a tidy up with a flap wheel on a grinder, and then primer'd ready for a couple of layers of satin black. I will do the satin black same time as the rest of the bar.

Made a massive mess in my garage but i got family stuff now so have just shut the door........

cheers.. :D

The untidy garage was sending my OCD wild and my feet were itching so I had to go out and tidy up.

Whilst out there I accidentally removed the rest of the rollbar. Needs a fair bit of de-rusting these bits. Grinder and jenolite it is then.

rollbarmounts2Small.jpg

Pinhole in this one, i have cleaned it up and its about 2mm x 2mm so will treat it and paint it and leave as is.
rollbarmounts1Small.jpg

Found 2 more spent rounds aswell behind the passenger side mount.

Ed

Ok painted the roll bar today with red oxide. Only the lower parts of the mounts and bars were rusted, the rest was ok but i stripped it all back anyway. I am going to re-paint it in satin black.

rollbar1.jpg

I painted the supports and the tub brackets in satin black as well, these were ok but i needed to have it all matching!
rollbar3.jpg

Also washed out the tub, and ordered some nato green. Took it for a spin, ran through box 'boxes and all is fine. Was bloody cold with no roof, doortops and just a jumper on.......

Ed

had my cross-member welded today. Cost £60. I am definitely going to learn to weld, as I dont fancy forking out loads for some one else to do welding in the future!

Flush fitted, then covered with a couple of layers of hammerite. Had a really good look at the rest of the x-member before welding in case more needed doing, but the rest is solid.

xmember.jpg

Also today re-fitted the roll bar now its painted and the rust on that sorted, also removed the bonnet mounted spare and worked out how to mount it in the tub. I shall make a mount (one day) but for now it is ratchet strapped in. The holes in the bonnet i have filled with bolts and rivets and will paint it over the summer.

DSCN2900.jpg

I also re-proofed the canvas tilt, and I also ground back a small area of surface rust below the windscreen and treated and painted that. Then I made a start on cleaing and painting some of the surface rust on the chassis, so far i have only done the rear outrigger. This is going to be a summer long chassis painting project lol
