Hi knowledgable folk, just trying to find out / gather ideas why my Series 3 2.25 fuel drains back so quick from the carb (Weber). Starts great in the morning from cold and if you leave it for 10-15 minutes when hot it'll start straight away. But, if i leave it for longer than 30 minutes it'll turn over quite a few times before it fires up!

As an example, drove 190 miles to Newbury towing a trailer and it was faultless. Stopped for fuel etc and left it for 30+ minutes. Got back in and it turned over a few times and fired up, drove up a slight hill out of the carpark it began to lose fuel and cut out! Popped bonnet, hand primed fuel pump (noticed no fuel in filter) and it started straight away and has been great ever since (less for when i leave it longer than 30+ minutes).

I 'think' it must be the fuel pump and the non-return values not working but open to other advice / ideas.

P.S. All ignition parts have been replaced incl coil etc

It won't be draining back from the carb to the pump, but it might be evaporating or leaking from the float bowl

Just need to check the plugs next time I crank it up after a break, that way I should be able to see if they are wet etc?

My 78' with a new weber does the same, I have a new fuel pump to try but I doubt it will help. It starts better with the choke on these days. I have fuel filter just before the carb it fills slowly when starting it up.

Hmmm same but just seems to empty (clear filter). If it’s evaporating where from?

I would renew the lift pump, you may well be right about the little valves.
