Yeah the series 3 grille looks okay but if i could get a maltese cross, be it original or the rockymountain repro then i'd far prefer that. Don't want plastic

If you are patient and scour ebay gumtree etc you can get a maltese cross for a sensible price that will look far more in keeping than the rocky mountain one. I dont like them they look too modern rather than the prioper ones made out of wire. I wanted one for my sereis 3 and even contact some fabricators who could make a replica for me for less than a lot of them were selling for, but then I found an original for £100. Although still a lot for a grill and more than the rocky mountain one it was a bargain compared to the prices some people pay.

Yeah you're right by all means. I'm not considering it a priority. More of an item to look out for in the future and maybe get lucky with at car boots. I've seen them going for ridiculous money and that put me off. The rockymountain one looks okay, just a little too bulky.

there is one on ebay for £150 which is much cheaper than others. But It is the perterbourough spares day begining of the month and not long until the newbury sort out. Thats probabaly your best bet to find one at a sensible price.

That one on ebay is in itself a repro isn't it? If you're looking at the same one i've been seeing.

I didnt actually look at it, just a quick search, it may well be. You could also try asking on the club pages, some one might have a hoard of them in the garage. There is a series 2 club, which I think also covers the 2a.

I'm going to keep looking around for one, get a quote from some local manufacturers since I have found an exact blueprint of a maltese cross grille and see how much that is. If too much then rockymountain may have to cover me for a bit.

I'll happily stand corrected but I think your speedo and temp gauges are series 3 as well. At the end of day you've got 50 years worth of someone else's work to contend with

So has my 1970 2a swb but with fitting a tdi and upgrading the gearing i will need an LWB Speedo

I have the blueprints for one and I’ll contact local manufacturers and see what a quote might be. If it’s not a bad price and enough people are interested then I’ll see what kind of batch deals can be had.

I’d rather not ruin an original std 2a grilles

That small hole in the wing would have a rubber bump stop in it. You then could remove the pin from the door stay and swing the door flat against the wing.[only 2's can do this] Both doors could be held open with a bungi across the front. Why the military did this I do not know.
The black dash and clocks are correct,several extra switch's though.

It’s possibly because it’s safer to have the doors open when on patrol. Easier to ditch out maybe?

Yes there’s a third switch on the top of the panel that seemingly does absolutely nothing. The switch on the right powers the heater and the dial below regulates heater speed.

Any idea where such rubber plugs could be obtained?

Bear in mind these were driven by squaddies, probably many driving for the first time and the Army made a point that they could teach anyone to drive in a day so expect a lot of early crash repairs. My footwells are riveted in with solid rivets, almost certainly an Army fix. Its very likley yours had new wings within a year or two of being made. The Army were never fussy about orginality and it would have got the next ones out the stores.

Thanks for the link. Okay so it’s quite possible that damaged parts lead to them swapping out part of the front end?

At some point a local auto repairs company owned it. There’s a local phone number and a business name just about visible when the rear windows fog up. I’m imagining there’s been a fair few changed parts.
