From what I gather the turny knob is a 2 speed switch so has 3 setting - on, slow and slower. Mine also pulls out which I think is for the washer jet. These things need many wires.
 
We have a long way to go....and as I said at the bottom of a very steep learning curve!

You need a good manual, and it should have wiring diagrams in it.
Haynes are OK, but the genuine manuals reprinted by Brooklands Books are better.
Haynes Series Land Rover Restoration Manual may be worth a read as well.
 
Yes Turboman..I have today received the repair operations manual...green book, the series 3 parts manual and the Haynes owners workshop manual...so between the 3 of them we should get it sorted...thanks again...didn’t realise people would actually answer on these forums.....no doubt I will be back soon....

Sounds like a good project for you both...post some pics...hope you have a sense of humour and dont get uptight at negative comments cause youll need it on here lol...you get bucket loads of both advise and xxxx take here...and we love it...
 
Wiper drawing the four wires is for the park facility.
May have two speed also, my drawing does not show high speed back to the switch but does tell the connection.
If new dumb irons [ bits that hold the front of front springs] have been fitted chassis number is lost.
