Hi,
I have a 51 plate TD4 and suffers from very similar symptoms as the other members. I took the Td4 to a local LR engineer who has been brilliant and very patient.
The intercooler hose has been changed, a new MAF fitted, and the problem still persisted. The engineer discovered that the main fuel pump had died....this has now been replaced.
Diagnostic software has been run and it gave an error of "Variable nozzle turbo (intemittant )" fault. from what i have read the probable cause of the problem is verly likely be the Valve Acuator and that it can be replaced. Can anyone confirm this if not any advice would be welcome :)

reet i assume they have changed the rear pump [in the tank in your case] if this is correct run it for a bit before forkin out on the turbo vanes, reason i say this earthling ,is yer turbo aint bin correct fer sum time as youve had low fuel pressure , if its still lackin power then yes bite the bullit and go un git yer turbo done. . . .best oh luck earthling. . . .:) :) :)
 
I have been there. Had the turbo changed, still same problem. Change the cam shaft breather filter first and then try it before forking out for a new turbo. More info on loss of power threads elsewhere on this site.

I have spoke with the authorised L/R Dealer, and when i asked about the Acuator Valve, the person said that they dont stock then and it is a special order plus he couldnt tell me how much it was. This surprises me considering how many f/l's suffer. Can you tell me where to get one from.... even better if i can buy one online.

*****UPDATE*****
The independant L/R specialist i use, is also working on this problem as its the first time he has experianced the diagnostics message of " variable nozzle turbo (intermittant)".
Tonight i went to the garage, and he decided that we would connect up the diagnostics software and take the freelander out on a test run to see what it occuring.

Location found: Dual carriage way with an incline.
On the flat stretch the revs were over 3k without any problem ... as we went up the incline, the revs dropped along with the power ..... the software showed the "fuel rail" was receiving very little fuel.....then as we got over the incline the revs increased, to back over 3k. The fuel rail reading also went back to normal.

This is very frustrating....:( Would this be cured by replacing the Depression limiting valve.

im no expert but it sounds to me to be a fuel problem not the turbo.Have the fuel filters been changed and what about the 3 fuel pumps

Thanks m8 :) , its had a new main fuel pump and new fuel filters, and the diagnostic software is reporting a variable nozzle turbo. besides the acceration is there all the time except when going up an incline... i was only aware of the 2 pumps...if there was a fuel starvation problem wouldnt the software report the fault.
 
ITS NOT GONNA MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE CHANGIN THE DE CROMPRESION FINGY [OOPHS IN CAPS LOCK] sounds like fuel problem , check fuel filter furst . . .on you model yer got the rear pump that pumps to the front pump then to the fuel filter and heater rhs of engine near wheel arch, this is the best place to check rear fuel pump,as fuel should **** out [if foamy or weak ]then suspect fuel pump or 5 way valve ,the pump at front is called secondry pump [but its really a lift pump] if pressure builds up to much then a fing called a pressure relief valve recurculates it all round again . . .any hows from front pump it go's to the high pressure pump ,that is driven via a pullyand then as very very high pressure to the common rail to the injectors that are fired by electrical signals the hot fuel [high pressure from the high pressure pump ] go's to a valve wiff a bi metallic fing in it if its too hot then is diverted to the fuel cooler [thats the griddle fing at front er engine] well thets most of it ,oh sept for the fbh. . . .na thets er nuffer subject . . .any hows ,feget pooters un diagnostic ****e , any good fitter would check pressure from 1st pump then 2nd then if happy with low pressure would then look at high pressure. . .its not rockit science :mad: :mad: :mad: i'm orft ta pub
 
One would think so but nothing is for certain.I was thinking along the lines that when you r going up a hill your engine is having to produce more power to maintane the same speed.What produces your engines power? fuel.Why dont you take it to another L/R dealer for a second check or even a turbo specialist.You could always see if you dealer would sort it on a no fix no fee basis.Its always worth an ask. Well I would go and change the depression filter thing. It only costs (I think ) about £40/£50 to do and it worked for me. If you follow the thread on "Freelander loss of power at 70mph" you will see what happened to me and my car has been fine since. My only worry for you is that maybe all the oil has gunked up your turbo. My turbo was seized solid in the end, the arm not moving at all when they replaced it. Apparently the engine cannot breathe, with pressure building up inside it and then the oil going through the turbo and hoses etc into exhaust, hence smoke in exhaust.

I found that if I took the car for a spin, stopped and checked the oil, when I pulled the dip stick out, the oil level was way up the dipstick, like the oil was being forced out under pressure. Another one is you are brave and don't mind a real mess, is take out the dipstick completely and then start the engine. As the pressure builds up, it will gush out of the dipstick like a fountain. See "Td4 rocker cover breather" on this forum and click on the picture to see what I mean by a mess!!

I am no expert but whether the rocker cover breather is the same as the depression filter thing I am not sure but the rocker cover is what I am on about.

When it happened to me, it was not a service item, it is now apparently every 24k miles.

When the freelander is being driven there is no smoke in the exhaust even when accelerating. I've had the crank case breather filter replaced as well as the MAF. I have read your thread and it was informative :) I have looked at the depression limiting filter, and i dont know what it does and how it can affect the fuel flow (can anyone explain this?)

As previously suggested, that it may be a fuel pump problem, the pumps were tested and thats how we found the main pump wasnt working....the main pump at the rear has been replaced, and the fuel pressure is good at low pressure and has a good high pressure except when going up hill when it drops (per the results of the test drive).

As you can imagine i am finding it frustrating, and release with patience it will be sorted. :)

Depression limiting valve
Finally got my backside into gear and replaced it today
Part no LR-8510298 Valve assy

Cost £25.26 inc vat from LR dealer

Took about 30 mins to fit

Feels a lot better, Some how feels smoother but there again i found a clip of on a plastic vertical tubing near the turbo where it fitted to the engine, Not sure what it was Any ideas - Turbo ducting - whats its purpose and what happens if its not airtight

Gave it a good bootful 20 miles came back and no oil coming out of turbo filter so watch this space

Its a totally different car to when i bought it with the roveron, EGR clean and bypass and now this
 
it only took me two months to find the problem with my bugger , td4 s are great when they are running right , best of luck

Glad (I think) that I've come across this thread. I took my 2002 Freelander 2.0 litre diesel car into the dealer with this exact problem. They've telephoned this afternoon to say I need a new turbo, turbo modulator (what is this?), and with labour it will cost £2000!

I think I may be best to get it back from them. Given the similarity between the experiences everyone is talking about here, it would be good to get some agreement on what the cause is before I do anything
