I'm Sorry if this comes up all the time but...

Got the dreaded 3 warning lights lit up on the dash and wondered if anyone knew the name of any software i could download that I could reset them with myself? I dont know if they are pre OBD or what but I cant find any software that will read off codes let alone put out the lights.

"The Three Amigos"

Often an inidcatinof a damaged ABS sensor, or simply that the wiring under the gearstick gaitor leading to the HDC switch has come adrift.

Cheers

Blippie

As I had the same problem I hace found that a lot of places can read but not reset the codes. My problem was the front right sensor which was not picking up the signal from the wheel. If the lights are on constantly (the HDC will come on when you pull away) the ABS system has found what it believes to be a permanent or serious/dangerous fault and will not reset untill repairs have been undertaken. If you measure the resistance of each sensor (front ones have the conectors in the engine bay, left hand is behind the battery) you should get approx 1 - 1.5Ohms. If that's OK yiou can renove each sensor, give them a good clean and replace into the hub. The sensors are just a push fit and should come out with a little GENTLE persuasion. Do not hit or strike the sensors. Once they are clean reinsert them pushing them in as far as they can go. If they were dirty or had moved (possibly from hitting a kerb/going over a speedbump too fast/stalling/changing a wheel etc) the sensor will not pick up the magnetic signal from the phonic wheel.
Checking this in conjunction with the brake pedal and gearstick switch should solve the problem privided you haven't lost a sensor/ABS unit etc.

George.

Cheers george... my lights are on constantly I think, if I do find a problem with a sensor and manage to fix it, will the lights go off themselves?

yes its part of the pre check program seperate to engine managment. . . .:)

Yes they will go out. The Freelander has a system where the module needs to sense a voltage from each hub before it clears any faults. This means that the lights will not extinguish until the car reaches approx 8mph and a voltage is induced into each sensor, that's why on a correctly functioning Freelander ABS system the ABS light stays illuminated until the car drives off.

Hey, Freelander owners with the 3 Amigos issue. On my 2001 td4 the dreaded 3 lights all come on together within a couple of kms of leaving home and then stay on until i turn the engine off. The speedo and rev counter seem to work fine. Could this be something simple hopefully ?

Hello
Also having the problem with the 3 lights coming on after driving few miles or so. They stay on until i turn off engine. Is this linked to ABS sensors under bonnet? Cheers

I`d be worried if my ABS sensors, were under the bonnet. WFT are they doing there? Checking the speed of the pulleys?

Hello all.
i have this problem on a 98 freelander 1.8 and its driving me nuts,
here is what i have checked.
1) the brake pedal switch.... its the old 2 wire on/off switch, working fine, brake lights on.
2) wheel sensors........... the front ones are corroded in and are not coming out unless i drill them out, on saying that they are working fine, each one tested at the plugs under the rear wheel arches and front inner wings, all reading the same 980 ohms and when the wheels were turned a steady fluctuation in ohms so the rotation is being picked up on all wheels, (at the bottom of all the hubs there is a small gap if you lift both front wheels you can spin them and can clean the ring with some emmery, then both rear wheels) ( only if they are rusty as i think they are coated to stop rust)
3) gear stick switch connector, when unpluged im getting the correct 12v, and while still unpluged the gear stick switch is switching on and off my cont beep on the meter, so all ok here,
4) all plugs and connectors are fine from the sensors, and going onto the abs block drivers side innerwing,
5) brake fluid is fine,
6) servo working ok
7) new front pads, ( and the abs was fine when fitted)
8) not checked rear shoes yet,
Now.......
i was told if one tyre is right down and other 3 high this will give a missmatch wheel reading as one is going faster than other 3, so to check this all wheels were lifted then only the engine ran them at the same speed, the 3 lights were still on,
now my mot is due so need to sort it quick.

Ideas anyone please ????????????

Hi Guys.
Changed my driveshaft on my 202 td4 but upon replacing it i think i damaged the sensor, should have taken it out before putting the shaft in!!. Sincde then there is a hell of a knocking noise comming from the abs block or what ever its called, only way to get rid of it is to pull the abs fuse????..Can anyone help please......
Thanks in advance...
Matt.....

There are different shafts. Are you sure the shafts reluctor ring is not cracked and is identical to the one on the shaft you replaced?

Thanks for this, I thought my ABS was faulty as I'm sure in the manual it says it will blink then extinguish.

Hi all new to landy zone, just got a 2001 freelander td4 with the dreaded so called 3 amigos on it, have been on here and followed good advice on how to get rid of it, have replaced brake light switch, checked wiring on gear stick but to no avail! thought had fixed it as all lights go off when car starts but soon come on again when car moves, so have come to conclusion that a faulty abs sensor is the problem, how can i find out which one it is?? and when i change it i have heard that the hub locking nut needs to be replaced for a new one is this true? or will the old one be ok if its not damaged? any help much appriciated thanks!!.

Wecome to the forum.

Use a multimeter to measure each abs sensor. They measure 950 to 1100 ohms. If you follow the abs cable you’ll see a yellow connector. Pull this apart to allow you to measure the sensor resistance. 4 to check.

You should be able to use a multimeter on AC volts to check the abs sensor reaction too. Lift 2 front wheels orf the ground. Pull apart above yellow connector. Measure AC volts across the sensor. Spin the wheel. As the sensor detects the wheel turning (reluctor ring thing turning) it will show a voltage. You should also be able to measure AC frequency too if yer meter has the option. Also do the same to the rear abs sensors.

it could be the g sensor these are comon it is under the centre consol that goes over the hand brake it is actually called the gravity sensor as it senses the braking and aceleration they cost about £60
