Hello


I have pure engine oil blown into my coolant header tank.


It appears I have caught it before any major damage occurred.



having searched the oil cooler threads on here, I have opted to replace this immediately.

And hope its nothing else in the pipeline.



With the cooler on the bench, I have blown down the coolant pipe into the cooler, and covered the 3 ports at different times.

While not foolproof, I can pressure it sufficiently to feel a leak between the two sides of the cooler.


Other than a good flush out and replacing the cooler , any other suggestions before I sell it ??



My Lada Niva was more reliable than this parcel...
 
The oil is pure black oil, so Im not convinced its the head gasket as its not aerated.

Ive ordered the new cooler, will be back on friday morning.



biggest headache is flushing out the coolant , and depositing the gunky water/oil mix somewhere not offensive to my driveway or neighbours.

you really need it at full running temperature to test for leaks across the cooler. The exchanger plates will expand and contract with temperature so bench testing is not usually fruitfull unless its got a massive hole in it!.
If the oils pure black it rules out IRD cooler or gearbox cooler, my mate had same problem and changed cooler. 3 flushes later he still gets traces of black gunge appear..guessing it will be around for a while to come yet too!
 
I had a definite blow between both sides to the oil cooler, the coolant side is still pretty manky. But it will get a few flushes tomorrow, dishwasher tablets are shifting it quite well. Big steam clean of it all friday, and also my very messy driveway which is now covered in black stuff.

Its had a thrashing this morning, and hasnt shown any signs so far of doing it again (yet), so early signs are the oil cooler is the culprit. But we shall see...


The car isnt inspiring confidence in me....


It has had a reprieve for the moment, and will be sold in April if it lasts that long.
 
it was a company called Shukers who had them for £106, but I needed a replacement asap as Im a t work friday and need the car.

so paid £132 at 4 muddyfeet




Just a point, the header tank was mucky black inside when i bought it, nothing fresh but its clearly had it before, I wrongly assumed it had head gasket problems hence the gunk, but td4s arent known for it apparently.

You will need some sockets and screwdrivers, and a T40 (i think) torx bit.

remove the engine top cover
remove intake manifold & trunking
starter motor off - I left it all wired in and put it out the way
drop oil & water
oil cooler off with bucket to catch the gunk


I pulled it all down yesterday, built it back up this morning including several flushes in a couple of hours.

I wouldnt say its a hard job Garry, done far worse.
 
Hi Everyone I'm new on here and will hopefully get around to introducing myself properly soon, but in the meantime I have to do this oil cooler jobby on a 2001 td4 soon has anyone got any more tips especially on what is the best stuff to flush the system with I have seen a Forte product which I think is called bio flush.
