Do I need any special tools?

Morning all

Well following my clutch giving up the ghost in the middle of france, I have contacted all the dealers and the soonest anyone can fix is september - not good.
So, Im thinking about having a go myself....

One garage said I could not do it as I need a special tool.

Does anyone know what this tool is and then even if I buy it myself it will no doubt still be quicker and cheaper to try on my own?

From my understanding it is a bugger of a job on the Freelander but entirely possible - a hydraulic ramp would make life easier. How about trying an independent LR specialist rather than a dealer?

If you are determined that a main LR dealer does it, it will set you back about £700. However, there shoud be no reason why they shouldn't do a great job. You could always phone them back and get them to squeeze you in as an emergency because "my clutch has failed and you are stuck in the middle of the road - might just be able to limp into you, though!"

This generally works - If you try and book your car in to a dealer they will look in their diary for the next available gap. If you turn up at their door with a broken car you will normally get seen that day or the next at the latest. This is because most dealers keep some space in their diaries for breakdowns/emergencies/last minute sales preps/etc.

There's no special tools to change the clutch or the hydraulics.

Clutch is not as bad to replace as it looks, people say its a pig of a job but in reality, it's a piece of **** and anyone who knows a bit about cars should be able to do it.

Get in there, have a go!!!!

Is it really that easy? I too had heard really bad stories about Freelie clutches. I dabble but when lots of people say it's hard it does put me off... I've done a clutch on a 2000 Mondeo and on an 1986 Escort in the past and they were OK. How would it compare to doing these?

About the same, once the IRD is off then its the same as any FWD car. The IRD is dead easy to remove.

1.8 freelander is the easiest of them all to do, I can do these in little over an hour.
Td4 is a little more tricky due to the size of the box itself but I can do these in a couple of hours. The quickest I've had the gearbox out of one of these is 40 mins. (I was having a race with another tech!)

That's typical. Still, my clutch is all good anyway (at least now I've done the master cylinder it is!) so hopefully won't need to try. IF I do, I think a trip to the garage where my brother works and a borrow of his help and his workshop ramp would be in order!

I bet its just the alignment tool they are talking about.

Just get a piece of 12mm dowel, (tent pole perhaps?) wrap insulating tape around the dowel to get the correct diameter for the shaft splines, and wider bore of the flywheel assemblage (see thumbnail).

When I fitted the heavy duty clutch to the 1.8 (same size plate as the Td4) there was 0.75mm between the plate hub and friction disc.

Ok..... I know your in France and you wont have feeler gauges in your suitcase but just go by eye,

Your main problem will be the oil seals for the driveshaft and IRD-to-gearbox seal. If your careful you might be able to re-use them and get you home anyway.
Get some plastic bottles for draining the oil into
Can you blag/borrow a metric socket set and possibly another spare car jack to help take the weight of the gearbox.
You could even let it drop on to an old mattress or something to break the fall.



FAO...... any RAVE guys here that can post pics of bell housing bolts on the gearbox of the Td4



Clutchdust - come on no need to show off, not all of us have airtools for easy removal, especially those who are on holiday in France. Its not something I pack in my suitcase
 
Cltuch alignment tool.
Wrap the dowel at a distance of 2cm and 5cm.
