Hi DM, can yo tell us how you got on 'cos I'm having the
same problems (ish), I have spent over a year having to hold
the gearstick solidly when reversing and, once the engine is warm,
engaging 2nd and 4th becomes really tricky(not to mention crunchy).
I took the console out today,desperately hoping for a broken bias plate
or springs but alas all is well with both. Considering how long this has been going on, I can't believe it can be a clutch problem so I'm snookered.

(1995 300Tdi) 109000 miles (still not run in, lol).

crunchy gears are a common problem on lt77 and R380 boxes - Ashcrofts do some uprated Syncros which reduce the problem, as does an oil change. Some peeps reckon changing to some sorta gold plated oil (judging by price) has a good effect too.
 
And by the way the bias must be adjusted sometimes...(procedure in RAVE)....i had the same issue once...replaced springs and pivot, adjusted bias and everything became smooth....old springs loose flexibility and see if they havent eventually threaded the lever.....mine had deep cuttings on both side made by the springs.
 
Would anyone happen to know the EXACT size of the bolts which hold the bias plate.
It seems to be somewhere btwn 13/32ths and 7/16ths / 11mm, or just to be really awkward is it a BA size.

I'd add to that. is it worth giving them the old shock treatment (short sharp tap with a hammer and punch) to free them off.
