Hi,
I have a fault that has just happened on my Discovery 2.5TDi,
Drove home no probs, then wife went out and was unable to get 2nd 4th or reverse gear. 1st 3rd and 5th work fine. the stick doesn't feel stiff it just wont go,I can't force it in and am obviously reluctant to put to much pressure on the stick for fear of causing any more damage.
If anyone has had a similar problem or can offer any advice it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks karl

Hi, Thanks for the help.
Can anyone tell me if you would get any warning with this fault, there was only about 5 Mins between me parking up and everything workng fine and the missus going out and only half the gearbox working.
Thanks againKarl.

I'd imagine selecting the gears would have gotten gradually worse over time, as most owners will testify, which you would have noticed, so not sure why the suddeness of it happening.

I'm not sure if this will help but check out this link, found it earlier whilst browsing..

Discovery Clutch Trouble

Try having a search on here, as there is loads of good info.

One of the S*L*U*Ts crew had a similar problem not so long back. Found that a £1.80ish piece of plastic had broken at the base of the gear lever.

Need to strip of the transmission tunnel and cover plate, then unscrew dirt cover on top of gearbox. The gearlever assembly is then held in with about 4 bolts. On the end of the gear lever is a ball which should be in a plastic cage.

This is the bit that had disappeared and was easy to replace. Certainly worth a look as its a lot cheaper than a recon box. Once fitted the gear change was better than it had been since getting the car, all gears easier to find, especially reverse.

I can't select second in cold but when engine is warmed up it is okay!!!

Probably is due to the oil in the gearbox;it was the same on mine but after changing with the recomended oil the cold shifting problem dissapears.Have a look on the difflock site and see their oil recomendations.

I had a very similar problem. Suddenly I could not get 4th or reverse. I took car into garage but it miraculously cured itself when they came to move the car. A few days later the problem came back. Googling the problem I found that someone else had stripped out all the centre console stuff and found a loose bit of metal in the little box area where lever goes into gearbox. This was preventing the gears being selected. I stripped out my centre console and lo and behold there was the loose bit of metal which after removal cures the problem. I think this piece of metal is in fact a bent up projection from the securing plate that helps provide the additional spring pressure required to get into 5th and reverse. I had noticed a while ago that this had gone. What happens is that wear occurs and the bent up projection frees itself from the plate and then rattles around in the box causing gear engagement problems. You would be better of getting a new plate and thereby restoring the spring pressure but if not you can engage all the gears, the box is just a bit vaguer than it was.

plate is the bias plate for setting springs so lever rest between 3rd and 4th exactly,as 1st 2nd are fully to the left and 5th and rev fully to the right
