Hi,

Has anyone tried or know if it is successful to take a 300tdi out of a 96 plate disco and replace it with the td5?

And if so what are the hardest parts to do, i'm assuming engine and gearbox monuts and electrics?

I'm pretty sure Land Rover offered at one time to retrofit a TD5 into ANY LR vehicle at the factory.

So it must be possible. That said, I agree with the others. Why bother? Remember all the wiring etc for the engine management is completely different, although I suppose that might be less of a problem if you used a motor from a Defender.

For the cost of a TD5 engine you can get a whole Disco2.

Yes you will need the Engine Management system from the donor as well as the gearbox as the 300Tdi R380 has a different bellhousing to the TD5 R380 gearbox.

Going (or staying) with a manual gearbox will also simplify the conversion.

Although i do agree with the why down grade part! i also had an offer of a 02 plate D2 for £600 the only thing was the chassis has big and i mean big (unpatchable) holes in from dunking boats in the sea, and to say the least i would like the project of rebuilding it on a new chassis, but that the problem i not have that kinda money and space for a new chassis rebuild.

Any way another question, i have a ticking noise that you would usually say it is the tappets only its not as i have checked and checked and checked again, any pointers its not annoying (yet) its just there.

Good luck with your project, I would go for it if you've got the space & time to do it. I agree that it will be an interesting & worthwhile project.

vac pump ticks like a mother when it fails. you can test it whilst driving along by dipping the clutch (ticking stops) and also more obviously is that you dont have much assistance in the brakes! if you hold the vac pump with the engine running you can feel the ticks to. is this on your 300 or the TD5?

vac pumps are prone to failure on 300s. my local indi said he sells around 18-20/year for the 300 and only 2 last year for the 200!
