Well, I spent a productive day Waxoiling me chassis in preparation fer the onset of winter.
While I was under there, I thought I'd scrape / brush all the **** off me back axle and treat it to a coat of black paint. Oh dear....

Both of the lower shock mountings and link-arm mountings are rusted to fook. The shock mountings are paper thin as is the near-side link-arm mounting. The off-side link-arm mounting has rusted right through on one side of the bush and is hanging on fer dear life on the other.

The front axle is absolutely fine and the chassis is like new, so I can only assume that maybe she was used fer boat-launching in a previous life.

Anyway, what to do?

Can you buy replacement mountings to weld onto the axle, or would they have to be fabricated? The rest of the axle is fine - no diff noise or bearing play or anything like that.
Or should I replace the whole axle and go for a Disco one, with Disc brakes whilst I'm at it? (Seems like a lot of work and expense though.)

All advice gratefully received.

disco rear axles are cheap as owt on fleecebay, sprogs got one on her 90, works well having discs that dad doesn't have to keep adjusting brake shoes. Foir the sake of undoing a few bolts it wud be quicker to fit than try and weld up your existing axle, all innnards will swap over if you get a 200 axle.

Hmm, had er look on flea-bay. There's a couple of 300 TDi ones but no 200's.
Will a 300 axle fit my 200 TDi 90?
Which other parts will I need or should I replace while I'm at it?
According to paynes, it's a 3 spanner job - I'd of thought it was a bit more involved than that?

Depends if you've got their special spanners;)

300 will fit ok just that they have 24 spline half shafts and the diff drive flange has a 3 bolt fitting for prop, so you wud have to swap over your diff and shafts

Snot ard swapping yer axle but you'll need more'n three spanners an some'll have to be imperial. Have a word with Take 5 he's just had a new axle put on his 90, dunno wot if owt is wrong with his owld un cept it's drum brakes.

saying all that its a piece of pee welding on new spring mounts and rod mounts - my local landy guru did mine in about 20 minutes and total job was about 40 quid including the new brackets.
Do yer know where I can get some replacement, weld on, brackets?
I've trawled the internet for hours and phoned around numerous suppliers.
My local indy hasn't heard of them. He's offering to try a bodge-weld job but recommending a new axle casing - £150 for the part from Paddocks.
:( :(

Trew - paddocks do em - cant find em on the web site but if you look at December LRO page 122 left hand side, half way up.. rear coil seat bracket weld on £5.88 each, tie rod bracket weld on £7.08 inc vat.

Bit of grinding, bit of cleaning, bit of measuring, bit of welding. ****. piece.

Thanks for all the suggestions / advice.

I went to look at a couple of Disco axles. One was more rotten than mine and the geezer wanted £100 fer it ffs!
The other, turned out to be a feckin FRONT axle, despite the geezer swearing blind it was a rear when I spoke to him on the phone - and that was a 30 mile round trip totally wasted. Good job I'm not the violent type!

Anyways, it's sorted now .....

This was the problem

I got these weld-on brackets from a local Indy for £12 each (I suspect that he got them from Paddocks)

I spent a happy hour and a half grinding off the old brackets and my son them came around and welded them on for me

All I need to do now is paint them.

Next job will be the bottom shock mounts - they're looking a bit thin, but they can wait till next spring.

To finish the job off, the whole axle was angle-grinder wire-brushed, degreased with copious amounts of solvent and rags then painted with 1 coat of Hammerite No 1 Rust Treatment / Primer and 2 coats of Hammerite smooth black.
