just heard that I need a release valve? to stop leak from engine but can't find this part - anyone point me in the right direction?

on the new defender the leak valve is the fuel pressure regulater so it could be something along those lines

Many thanks - The fault is back engine at drivers side. Still waiting on mechanic to tell me which part I need. Think your probably right and will either need a fuel pressure or fuel injector.

Is that on the PUMA engine?

Yeah on the PUMA engine the leak valve is fitted to the fuel pressure regulator and if leaks in true alnd rover style you must change the whole fuel pressure regulator. Apparently its one of the common faults with them and transits.

Sorry guys should have mentioned it is a TD5 1999. Am i right in thinking that both the fuel pressure and fuel injector is at the back of engine (drivers side).

the fuel pressure regulator is at the back of the engine and the injectors are inside the cylinder head

No dramas. So we are more than likely looking at a leaky fuel regulator which as you say you have had new pipes fitted may be just as simple as a new gasket or the pipe stubs are loose which can be unscrewed, cleaned, and reseated with new copper washers or O rings (cant remember what they use of hand). OR the casing of the regulator is buggered in which case you need a new one.

Hello. I need the diaphragm (top hat unit) of the fuel pressure regulator. Not the complete unit. Where can I buy one?
Please help, Buks de Vry [email protected] in South Africa
To my knowledge they are not available separately and believe me I have tried for some time to find service parts for the fuel regulator. However if it is weeping fuel you can get the regulator apart and replace the O rings even though LR say it is a non servicable item. I bought a large bag with various sizes of Viton (think that is what they are called) O rings for £5 at an auto jumble. Must have been more than 100 rings in the bag. If the diaphragm has split then I dont know if you could fabricate one as I've never tried.

I have worked all over Africa and quickly learnt that nothing on a Landy can not be taken apart. You cant always fix it but more often than not you can with a little ingenuity.

I dont know if its an official phrase, but I use the term " African repair " quite often. ( repairs that are able to be made to vehicles with no more than banana skins and a welder ! ).

Am I right in saying that most FPRs leak from the diaphram anyway ?.
( mine did ) ( as did the new Britpart one after 40 miles !! ).

We call them "bush mechanic" repairs many of which last for a surprisingly long time given the harsh conditions that the vehicles operate in. A good bush mechanic is worth his weight in spare parts and a lot cheaper.

My FPR was weeping from just about everywhere it could. Took it apart, cleaned everything up, changed every O ring I could get at and fitted a new gasket and now its as good as gold. Still dry after nearly two years.
Total cost about £2.50 and two hours of my time including getting the thing on and off and having a brew.
