...OK, this is *pretty much* the last of the original 'qwerks' my car came with, which I am yet to sort! The fuel gauge doesn't work and never has since I had it, although apparently it did a few days before I bought it when it went for its MOT. Who knows.

Anyway, I got in the boot today, got under the fuel pump inspection hatch and had a look. Lots of rust to be honest, but the wires on borh sides of the connector block seemed secure, no obvious faults.

The earth wire, however, was very corroded and snapped in my hand. So, I cleaned the contact well with wire wool, stripped some fresh wire, fitted a new connector to the end of the wire, plugged it all back in...and still nothing! Bugger!

So, what next? Is it the sender unit? Or maybe something at the dash end? Any suggestions appreciated!

What year is yours? The only thing under the inspection hatch on mine is the fuel pump. The fuel gauge sender is on the side. The wires on the top there are for the fuel pump only.

Oh bugger. That explains a lot then!! It's a 1991. I'm new to Range Rovers....well at least the fuel pump has a good earth now!!

So where is the sender located?

OK, will take a look when it stops raining!!

Annoyingly, the NEW alternator belt has just snapped! Just been for a drive and noticed on the way back that the rev counter had died and battery light had come on - again! Checked under the bonnet and sure enough, no alternator belt. Got home and managed to find the the belt, which was very badly worn (many of the teeth were worn away completely) and the snap line right across one of the most worn bits.

So, what could of caused a brand new belt to snap? Too tight or too loose perhaps? Could the pulleys have caused it? Not really sure what a worn alternator pulley look like!! Any thoughts welcome...

if it was slipping you would probably hear it screech, if the pully was rough it could have cut it. try tunning th alternator by hand, maybe its fooked and so hard to turn its knackering the belts. They could have overtightend it but then what about the demise of the orginal one?

check it or alignment with the other pullys too.

pretty much. Supplied one to a customer on a gaylander Gay series who had the same issue and the pulley wouldnt even turn in a vice. it also had a crack in the casing..possibly caused by the force of the snapped belt.

There was a pretty loud squeal, but I had (wrongly?) assumed that was the fanbelt! Having said that, the garage road tested it after they fitted the new belt and all was fine. It did squeal when I picked it up but the mechanic said probably just cold or mositure on the belt.

What would cause it to screech like that then? Why would it slip? And how do you turn an alternator by hand - just spin the wheel?

yeah just turn the pully by hand

shouldnt have been screeching on pick up , he hasnt done it right , I would take it back end get em to fix it, if they cant even change a belt right I wouldnt go back after that!

True true! It'll be going back in this week to be sorted thats for sure...

Pulley should turn by hand with a small amount of resistance with no grinding or funny noises.

I even told the customer they were called gaylanders:D:D

you bet ur ass, told him to get a proper landy like mine :D

horrific mpg , rust , noise , dirt and supreme off road ability :D

Hi all,

Going back to this topic - my fuel gauge still doesn't work, so want to check the sender unit this weekend. Can anyone tell me where exactly it is located? The underside of my car has been waxoiled, so hard to tell what's what as it's all black now!!

Cheers!

You really must stop having multiple threads on same topic. Sender is part of pump.
