Hi all,

Considering both for future purchase right now. Used, anything after
2000. 4 X 4. 3/4 ton, and heavy duty towing a must.

If you own a Suburban/Yukon XL, why didn't you buy an Excursion?

If you own an Excursion, why didn't you buy the Suburban/Yukon XL?

Besides the never ending Ford vs. Chevy debate, what were your
reasons? I've googled extensively, and I know the Ford is more truck
like with slightly less creature comforts, and the GM's are more car
like. I know the Powerstroke is better for a lot of towing as well.

If you had to moderately lift either for taller tire clearance, (4" -
6"), which would be cheaper/easier to lift, provided they both had
final gear ratios to support such tire size, (probably in the 31
range)?

(I'm well aware of the inherent changes to center of gravity and
driving style needed to operate a lifted vehicle, thanks. Cut my teeth
on a CJ-7 with 33's!)

Thanks all.

I am a Chevy guy and have been looking at the Suburbans. I have never
really dug into the Excursion idea. But one plus I can see with the
Excursion is that they have a solid front axle, that should be easier /
cheaper / better to put a lift on than the Chevy's. But on the other hands
that is part of why the Chevy drives more like a car.

Hi Fletcher,

I'm a long time Chevy guy too, 92 and 96 Chevy Astro's, both 2 wheel
drive. I've talked to a few people who said they just got an overall
impression of "cheap" when they test rode the Excursion. I'd like to
find one locally to check for myself though.

Are you buying new? We're not. I'd like to stay above the 2000 year
though, as that was the year of the body style change. Do you know of
any major differences between 200 and 2004, or the years in between?

I didn't know the Excursion had leaf springs. I wrongly assumed that
because it's a Ford, it has coils, like most of there fleet. Are you
sure about the leafs?

Thanks
Donny

Leaf springs on the 4x4s and coils on the 2x4s. (Fronts I mean.)

When comparing the GM and Ford, ride and handling are going to be the
biggies. Basically the GM excels in both in comparison. (I'm also
going to assume the Excursion's steering has a numb feel like my F-250
Super Duty. You get used to it, but it hardly feels sporty!)

Oh, I've got a 96 GM Safari as well as my Super Duty and I don't think
of one being any "cheaper" than the other. Different yes, but not in
a bad way.

I prefer Ford products over the GM. The GM interiors always seem very
plastically and illogically laid out. The switch geear is awful. In
addition, they seem to develop squeaks and rattles alot more than the
Fords. I recently rode in my friends'95 S10. I couldn't believe how
sqeaky and rattly it was and how poorly the seats had held up - and it
only had 70k miles. In addition, the laundry lists of repairs that he
had was huge.

Actually of the four wheel drives, the only Ford truck that comes with coils
is the brand new F150. As far as I'm concerned the jury is still out on
that one. I much prefer leaves or the torsion bars used on the 4x4 F150's
up until 2004.

Personal choice though I suppose.
