sorry for the repeated treard, and for being 18 months to slow,
and extra apolagies for not taking any pics, but if needed ill take some when it a lil warmer
But its just occoured to me that ive fixed that flat battery syndrome on my jap import 300tdi auto,
the probl;em origanally was that, sometime (most of the time).
when i'd go to start the disco, it would be like the battery was flat, or the engine would turn slowly, but then next time she would start turn of the key,
after weeks of trying to resolve this, new earth straps, battery leads to starter, i gave up and just left it, it was'nt much of a problem. she always eventully started.
the next fault i ame across was the ingnition switch, the key would jam in the switch, now this was a problem, as we cant be leaving the key in, .
this bringing another problem. finding a new switch, not a easy task for a jap spec, a barrel assy, is'nt availble and the only option given to me was a nas spec disco part, which is'nt available either (great).
being a jap spec disco auto i was told at the time my next option would be to change the gear selector mech, the ignitioin assy and the have it rewired to bypass the immobilser, i was told realisticly at the time its not worth doing, by a garage in bedford, and by another in wellingboro it was going to cost me over £1200. ths could'nt be right i thought.
it's a old landrover not a one of these range rover sport, how hard could it be to do it my self i thought,
my last option was to do it my self, well how hard could it be?
i started by odering a new britpart switch at a cost of about £20 posted to me, (worth a try i thought). and then stated taking off the cowling from behind the steering, and the panal under the steering.
instantly i could see that is was going to be a mission,
as jap spec barral was different where it had a seperate switch attached to it for the gear selector. and the wiring harness was also different,
what was i to do? i didnt want to be cutting up wires,
as i hate crimping and if i solder it never sticks and im left with blobs of solder every where but the copper,
and it was the barral at fault not the wiring, could i just changed the barral, the only differance betwen them was the selector switch attached,
and the way the wiring connector was fitted to the barral,
on my one the black platic block was fixed in by 2 small M2 screws, holding the connector from the sied of the cylinder, and the britpart new barral had two screws going in from the back holding it in,
there was no drilling reqiured on the new barral as there was already two holds in the correct place for my disco's wiring connector, but i did have to find two longer m2 screws, which i knicked of a old laptop , to fitt them together.
Now what to do ith the gear selector switch and the wiring, connected to the old barral,
there was two screws holding the switch and pin, (the pin clicks in to the switch when in lock position). which i had to take off, leave off and cabled tie to the wiring harness to keep out the way,
i fitted the new lock on to the steering collum, replacd palstics, nad there we go, the whole job took me most a hour and half, with faffing around.
and there everything worked fine, (even the pinging to tell me my doors open and the keys in the ignition).
i probaly didnt take pics as i ws just trying to see if i could repair it, and not have to go the garage root, and spend the money the wanted to charge,
But any way 18 months on the disco starts first time every time, and it only cost me £20.00.
