XDi or TD4

Hi, Im new to Freelanders... and Im sorry if this topic has been done to death!....Im steering clear of the petrol models purely as I have heard so much about head gasket problems? However I am going to be doing a fair bit of town driving too so I am concerned about mpg. I am considering buying a 1999 xdi 2 litre station wagon. But alot of people are saying I should buy a TD4. So, can anyone put a freelander virgin straight on whats what and which one I should buy. Cheers Elaine

But what exactly is the difference between XDi and TD4?
