Hi All,

New to the forum & needing advice.... Got the chance to get a '51 td4 that has only done 24k, just been told that the engine management light is on but he has been told that probably air flow problem & should be nothing serious. This car has only ever had 1 service and used minimally. Car is going dirt cheap for a td4 but don't want to be buying a bag full of trouble just wondered if you all think I'm mad to still be interested or should I just walk away now??
Bloke is putting into A garage (not an agent) & should have more news on Monday........

You need to find out whats wrong first but usually it's nothing too serious.

Common ems faults are low low side fuel pressure (usually the low pressure pump). If its this then, deck the throttle in neutral and it shopuld rev cleanly to the limiter, if it splutters at about 3000 rpm and the light comes on then thats what it is.

High pressure fuel rail sensor connections, these vibrate badly due to the injector pulses and the terminals open up causing bad connections, wiggle the plug with the engine idling, if it tries to cut out, thats what it is.

Turbo modulator vac pipes chaffing and leaking, this will give you a feel of no boost and ems light will come on

Turbo pipes split or collapsed, this wont always put the light on but you will feel a lack of power with a lot of black smoke on acceleration.

All I can think of off hand.
