Gents help!.

Driving to work this morning the wipers suddenly stopped work. 1986, defender 90.
I can here the motor working still but no movement.
If I move them back to the parked position and then turn them on they do move all the way one way. But don't go back.
Any thoughts before I take out the dash.
I did here a crunch when it happened so I have a feeling I know what it is, but in denile.

Any advice would be great.

Has the cable snapped? That would allow it to be pushed as the 2 ends meet, but not pulled back again.
I've always found the motor and/or gear to be the weak point either seizing solid or stripping the teeth

Same happened on my 90 Puma. Did take the whole dash out only to find it was the cam in the wiper motor housing worn out so not making contact with the threaded wire. Probably could have replaced this without removal of entire dash.

Reminds me of a rare occasion I took landy to work 80 miles in the rain... squeak squeak squeak from the wipers.... then on the A road all of a sudden peace and quiet..... ahhhhhh bliss... then the reality that the silence was due to the drivers side wiper coming off fully as the screen ceased to clear. Luckily Warwickshire Land rover had one in stock and loaned me to the allen key to get it on.. I was impressed he knew the size without checking.

Driving home on a nice sunny afternoon. I was almost at my drive entrance when I saw something on the road ahead Looked like a wiper and arm Land Rover size. OH you got it, mine.😊

Tip when doing yours lube the spindle axles where they enter the bulkhead.

So silly question. Why would they go from the parked position to the vertical and not back again if the cable is broken, as surely to make that happen it would be a pull from the cable. Hence if broken it could not do it.

The cable goes over the top of the gear wheels on the wiper spindles, so a push would raise them and a pull would lower them. So it may still turn out to be a broken cable.

Take the corner cover off the dash, unbolt the motor and pull it out with the cable on it, you will soon find out if its broken.
Top half of the dash is easy to take off, about 10mins should do it.

Ok great thanks gents. Last noddy question. How easy and how do you get the cable through the wiper connection , gear spindal itself, I'm slightly panicking as need to get fixed tomorrow as booked for offroad 4x4 day Saturday. Any step by step pointers, or photos would be great

If its broken you need a new one and will need to do some dismantling.
If its not broken then grease it up and shove it back in through the pipe.
I think it would be fair to say something is broke.
Unless you have new parts then fingers crossed it's dry on Saturday.
What 4x4 site are you going to ?
