I've been reading a load of threads about wiper issues because mine finally failed this week.

I've been ignoring some intermitted problems for a while but it finally spurred me into action after the fuse blew twice. So, today I stripped out the dash top, inspected what I had and removed the motor.

So my questions are this - as well as the motor (which is making an awful noise) what else do I replace?

The symptoms are:
Wipers not parking (stopping where they are when I switch them off)
Intermitted wipe not working at all
Slow draggy wipe motion
Screaming motor on fast wipe
Intermitted loud ticking sound
Also, fast wipers doesn't always work. In that I switch to position 2 and sometimes the wipers stop, switch back and forth between pos 1 and 2, then the wipers kick into action.

I had a look behind the instrument cluster to try an identify where the relay is but nothing looks similar to any pictures on the web. My defender seems to be one of those that was built out of the remaining parts bin at the end of the 300Tdi production cycle as it's marked as a 'Special Vehicle'.

I assume I should buy a relay as well as the motor - is there a separate park switch? Do the gears that are attached to the wiper arms wear out? I read that several relays will fit so any recommendations?

Many thanks in advance.
Rich.

First check that the wiper spindles where they pass through the bulkhead for corrosion and getting stiff. You should be able to waggle the wipers a bit by hand. Park switch is on the motor. Gears can wear out and start skipping, more so if the above is happening.

You can replace the self park switch on the wiper motor very easily, a new wiper stalk switch would be a good idea too and not very expensive.

Have just replaced all of mine except the motor, which a mate cleaned and meddled with the brushes for me. Haven't changed the steering column switch but believe the park switch is on the motor.

My whole lot including, cable, wheelboxes, spindles and wiper was about £70

Not too bad a job just time consuming to remove the dash etc.

Top tip get lots of small pots and separate the screws and fixings and area at a time as they are all very specific and different lengths etc.

If you need a snip of the RAVE manual just ask

OK, I've replaced the motor and inserted a new relay.
The wipers still don't park and the intermittent wipe still doesn't work.
The fuse no longer blows so 1 out of 3 so far.
Any ideas?

Watch this, he had same problem and changed his motor and problem still there. Then cleaned his wiper stalk contacts to fix the fault, on a disco but hay its a Landrover.

Fitted a new stall, it's not the stalk.
So, new motor, new relay, new stalk but still no park, no intermittent wipe
Any other thoughts?

Yep, and nothing happens when intermittent wipe selected (which reminds me, I haven't checked if the washer works, will do that this afternoon and report back).
