Below 60 mph everything is fine but at anything above this speed the drivers side wiper makes a loud cracking noise when it hits its top position (Vertically upwards)

Its starting to annoy the Mrs, the wiper arm is fine and there is no play in the motor control arm at all, its impossible to replicate whilst stationary as it only happens above 60 mph.

Any ideas chaps ?

it is wind noise, when the wiper sweeps its arc across the screen it displaces the air around it, as it reaches its fulcrum then changes direction it is displacing the air around it and trying to change gravity, so to speak, therefore you get a wierd noise, it is posible that it only happens over 60mph as this speed is the peak where the pressure cant cope anymore, i hope this helps ;)

Hello zippy!
try takin off the big black wind pressure assisting bit:confused: Thats not a technical term I'm sure.
I found it helped and made no difference to the performance of the wiper

All the more reason not to cure it then.

I did like that one Grunt, The noise sounds like a stone hitting the glass so its not wind noise.
I have just removed the wind deflector on the drivers side blade, i will send her out to test it.

Cheers Guys.

that bang you speak of being like a stone hitting the glass is definately a wind noise, if you bang 2 solid objects together they make a noise, the same thing happens when 2 pockets of air bang together but because you cant see it happening you cant relate to it, basically its like a thunder clap, 2 pockets of air banging into each other ;)

clap i can relate to, so you saying that his gaylander has been shaged by that bloke at the top of the page? you know the one that likes to pork exhaust pipes

I think the hippo has some years already ? (MY 00 or MY 01 or so ?) It's the whiper rubber which became rather stiff of old age and when changing direction from going up towards coming down the whiperrubber is forced to change position and as it's not supple anymore it makes that clacking sound. Going up the rubber is 'pulled' upwards by the whiperarm when on top of it's course the rubber can't be 'pushed' down by the whiperarm and therefore it has to change position in order to be 'pulled' again downwards. I realise all the above looks like sh.. but I think this is the cause of the 'clack'. (Mine does the same but I don't mind. So far):D :D :D

Yeah Right :p :D :D
I get this noise at lower speeds.
I put it down to the stop position on the motor for the top not being very accurate. The arm reaches its top position and some times it stops short of the edge of the screen, and sometimes it sails over and thats when I get the noise.

Think someones been watching too much Braniac me finks

that is obviously because your wiper motor is knackered and the noise you get is different as you said, yours happens at lower speeds, as for watching braniac its called inteligence, something you obviously are lacking in ;)

now, now, gurls!

Yep i agree with the Willo on this, changing ya blades to new one will help ,but i find that the bosch ones are the quietest but dont last very long. . . .:)

i had a mate that used to deliver bosch wiper blades so he obtained a few new sets fer mine and the doris's car, i fitted em all and i was chuffed to bits, until it rained, and they were feckin useless, i use those cheapo 5 bladed ones off the market, cut em to length, they are great fer a pound ;)
