Not found anything recently posted, so got to ask what's the best value winch out there atmo?
Seen adverts for warrior, rhino, fleabay cheap, all sorts. So any advice would be appreciated
 
Any particular brand that's good value? I would rather get some input from you guys than spend days researching brands, warranties, models, parts availability, cost of parts with shipping, (because I'll bet there's going to be some out there with "superb aftersales service" where the cost of a couple of parts is more than the purchase price)

If you can buy the winch with rope not wire it will be better.
Rope does not rust. You can splice the rope if it breaks.
Don't forget to Price for a bumper,extra charging.

Couldn't agree more on getting it pre fitted with rope but for some reason they mostly come with wire fitted and for some strange reason they charge more for it to come fitted with rope :eek:

I've opted to go for a twin alternator set up on my 200Tdi and hope that 100A alternator will be plenty enough to keep a yellow top Optima battery topped up and keep current flowing to the winch.
 
Lol, I think I need a winch because I need, amongst other things, to pull a caravan up my (annoyingly steep) drive where I can't tow it up, am not physically strong enough to push it up and can run a pulley from a post at the front and winch the caravan up from behind it. I tried reversing it up but always seems to finish in the wrong spot and I then spend ages painfully moving it back and forth to place it on the flat spot properly, behind the security post (only a 20 odd feet flat spot before someone thinks I have a stately home) . Alternatively I could buy a "motor mover" for it, but they cost money too. And won't look very attractive bolted on to my front bumper.
 
Remote controlled caravan mover.
Engages with 1/2 turn of a lever. Sits on the caravan by the wheels
Parents use one to move their van on loose chippings & spin the van round so hitch is against the house.
Easier than a winch

I know, bit pricey but you get what you pay for!!! Totally top class winch!!!

I do like the caravan movers, but I don't have the width to spin the van, and I can't use them to drag myself out of a bog if I get too stupid, also the price of a decent mover is as much as a winch, and I only have about 60 kg left on my weight for the van, unless I take everything out and put in the Disco, but then the Disco's full, hmm unless i make the wife take a train , and not have to listen to her, her music, her sat nav reading, hmm, How much were those mover's again?
 
Other side is of course, I don't want the winch ONLY for moving the caravan,
Example of other uses
Filling the hole in the winch bumper that effectively is a set of bull bars
pulling that bastage hedge out of the wall,
pulling over the same wall
using off road pointing out it's a XXXX and then refuse to help someone because they look like the wife :p (joke btw)
Actually using it for it's intended purpose off road for when I stupidly drive into a hole (trust me, I will ) just check my Signature
 
Everyone says you get what you paid for and that is absolutely correct. However I liken it to going to Princess auto and Buying 3 cheap pipe wrenches for what a brand name would cost for one. My reasoning is that I'm not earning my living with it so it cant be written off and I can return it if I break it. Having said that I bought a cheap Champion 8000lb winch for 1/2 the cost of a Warn. It has steel cable, but rusting has never been AN ISSUE. I've never used rope and though I hear its good I can't see myself spending the extra money just for the sake of it being a little better. Steel cable is cheap. On one of my winches I dropped down a size and picked up an additional 25' of length. I've only used it maybe 10 times, but its never let me down.
 
Steel wire. Here's a few pointers.
(Yes I used to rally recovery & hanging/using 2 winches was normal)
When laying this back onto a winch after recovery watch out for the nice sharp broken strands that's telling you you are due for an accident.
You don't use your winch for a bit & don't maintain the wire goes rusty & fails.
It tells you it's going to give up but no one ever listens to it.

Rope
If it "rots" /breaks easy to splice
Less snags after recovery
Less weight to pull up the hill on free spool.

Yes my winches were good & well maintained I go rope over wire every day. Only time I use wire is on a tirfor. When I can see/hear what's happening at slow speed & can stop.
