considering a discovery weighs 2.25 tonnes I'll let you work that out for yourself
But the op is not looking to lift it only pull, have you ever seen a bloke pull a lorry?
I would advise getting the bigger of the 2 though.

Good point on that mate but think I'll go fir 4 t then , I was more wondering if many people use the hand winch
Spot on cheers, I'm I right in thinking I'd have to get a steel cable to use on the other side of the winch to anchor to something solid

but you don't try and lift half your discovery with a 1.5t jack when changing a tyre do you

for the amount of times you will actually use a tirfor; get a hi-lift with the adaptor kit for hand winching.

As Ginge says, a Hi-lift with shackles made to suit a chain or winch rope/strop is way more suited than the cheap hand-winches. The 2t and 4t they refer to is a relatively easily shifted rolling weight, NOT a hard to move, stuck in the ****e, weight!
I'd hazard a guess that they're possibly better than nothing in the right circumstances or for moving a caravan or boat on a drive or slipway, but not for pulling a Disco out of a Ditch or Forest .. a Hi-lift could, albeit with effort and slowly!!

have a look on you tube and winching with a jack technique will become clear
allso there is a guy with a long rope and various pullys recovering his self
Its all on there have a look and tell us what you decide to do
And then go get stuck and video your self pulling yourself out so we can see how you go on

Me to im interested.
Its hard to mount a winch to a freelander, expensive to do so and it wouldn't get used enough...
But a setup which is cheaper, takes less space, and can mount to different vehicles interests me

I had it all setup with a chain, hooks and D-links to turn the Hi-lift into a hand winch, but sold it when I got an electric winch fitted, needed the money. I could make a setup again to show the principle, I'd be using strops and rope but the principle is easy enough.

It might be worth looking at the following images .. they'll probably give anyone a better idea how to go about it than I can. I'll still mock a winching scenario sometime tomorrow, it's obvious when you think about it and have a Hi lift and some recovery stuff, but there are plenty here.

any kind of winch is great if you have summit to winch off
and have u ever tried using a gnd anchor with a hi lift it just doesn't work its a 2 man job even with a leccy winch and takes numerous attempts for the anchor to finally dig in..

Turfors are great if you can't afford a vehicle mounted winch. An article in Lro years ago recovered a swb with para cord!

Day to day a highlift is pretty useless!!! Its big heavy and clumsy!!
If you get a puncture I still use a bottle jack. BUT, trying to unstick a dead motor with a flatt battery or even to move your wheels over into a gully on a welsh mountain side a high lift is INVALUABLE!!

We recovered a dead disco that was half hanging over the edge of an 18Ft drop into a river it was there 3 days. 2 high lifts and strops it was out in a couple of hours. we did winch it back when it was accessible but high lifts worked great the guy had a quite hevy duty hand winch which broke!! The ratchet was just pressed steel plate.
