Can someone please give me some advice, i know absolutly nothing about electrics and want to wire up a new winch, its not going to be used much, the wires are currently too short to reach the batterys so i was gonna run the live to the starter motor and earth to the chassis, will that work?

I do have a twin battery set up with a split charger and an isolator in the seat box but really not sure how to wire it up properly, i have second a battery that has a switch on the dash board, when swithced the dual split charger has a guage showing its chargeing rate.

Yes the starter motor has a permanent live feed using heavy wire so should work.

Personally I'd not - I'd just extend the wire

Haven't searched today, but there are threads on setting up dual battery systems

electronically there is no difference between running a new longer wire or attaching it to your starter, money wise it will be cheaper to use what you got, it will also mean you dont get a lot of wires running into your battery box, i would attach it to the starter, just dont use starter and winch at the same time.

To get the best out of the winch DO NOT CONNECT TO THE STARTER.
Buy longer cables and take the + and the earth to the battery. depending on the horse power of your winch it can draw in excess of 400amps the cable going to your starter wont handle this. Run the earth back tot he battery terminal not the chassis this is why most winches dont preform to there best because of poor earths. Do it properly and you wont have any problems. I have my winch with longer cables P clipped to the chassis and on to the second battery controlled by a X Eng split charger, Never had any problems with it and it is faster than the other guy in the club who has exactly the same winch but has not ran the earth back to the battery.

Remember defender always have bad earths there made that way

cheers Andy, I wired it to the starter at the weekend and all appears ok but ive not used it yet, im on the hunt for some extra cable, any ideas where to get some mail order?

Its not 50mm wide, It has a OD of approx 13.3 mm. From what im reading it is only good for approx 345 amps. Personally i would go heavier. I have the 60mm square (which is approx 14.5 mmm OD) and is good for approx 415 amps.

You can buy the cables from here ...VWP - battery cables

I thought you would know it was 50mm square. I agree it is a bad word to crimp, i soldered the ring terminals on and covered with heat shrink
