WLM if/when ya read this did you sort your winch out? What did it turn out to be?

Has anyone taken a winch apart?

Mine has siezed up (Well just clicks) as tho its trying to turn but has stuck!

I was last at KORC paying and playing which is like playing in cement!

Like an idiot (well just ant had time) i havent clean out and serviced me winch like usual and it seized up! I say seized up cos the synthetic rope is solid in some kinda hard clay/cement stuff and doesnt even free spool out by hand!

Anyway what would i take apart on the winch which is most likely to be the problem?

Cheers dudes!

hi m8..after days of fooking about with solenoids and rewireing and checking everything it turned out to be the motor was fooked..

to test if yr motor is fooked, leave it in situ and disconnect all the wires apart from the earth that goes to the bottom of the winch

then use a cable to link from the input on the left of the winch marked A.
and link accross to either f1 or f2

then use a jump lead from the battery + and touch it to either f1 or f2 which ever one isnt the one you linked..

if the motor spins up then winch is fine if it dont its fooked..

hth contact me if ya need any other info...rich

If the winch is just "clicking" it could be that one of the solenoid pairs is buggered....

As WLM said, check your motor in situ, before stripping the whole thing out.... If the motor is broken, you could possibly get it refurbed / rewound. If the whole winch is clogged and in need of a service, then it need thoroughly cleaning out, then regreasing with molybdenum grease.

heres some tips on cleaning / servicing

Rebuilding and installing a winch

Be careful when you remove th motor, as the coil is only held in by a bearing, and the Commutators (magnets). If you dont remove the motor carefully, then the outer casing will come out, but the coil will stay in... Its a bugger to put the coil back into the shell..

not familier with that one..

but most winch motors have 2 bolts to undo on the side of the motor that are the length of the motor housing, you then wiggle and prise up the motor and out it will pop.

No worries, il give it a strip down when i get a spare day. I bet its full of crap inside going by the rope. I should have cleaned it out properly before it had time to set inside........ live and learn, il give a good sealing full of grease while im there! Cheers mate

i found out the main bearing was stuck fast to the shaft of the motor so had to buy a new one..

theres always summit that fooks ya
