Hi all,

am I correct in thinking this will also fit a TD5 90? The description says only 200tdi and when I chatted to them the customer service of Paddocks is "it only fits a 200tdi".

Doesn´t make sense, I am pretty sure the tub is the same for all 90s (apart from some having a bulkhead and other not). The picture with the product is obviously a Puma engined 90.I want to do a soft top conversion on my 90 hard top for when spring comes round.

Cheers

@mikerajjers , as above go straight to SD website for product check - I'm pretty certain it will fit all Ninety/90 versions - often the only difference between SD "Expidition" products are whether they are for with or without bulkhead.

Now, understand this is what you want...and the SD roll bar is super strong...but, there's always a but ;), the strength comes from what the roll bar/cage is bolted to and Land Rover bodies are made of papier mache. For a roll bar/cage to be effective it needs to bolted/welded strait to chassis. My Ninety soft top has an SD full roll cage that's welded to the chassis front and rear. It's quite a faff to install the front under wing to chassis for welding as [ideally] the front wings need to be removed. But...another but :) , should the worst happen and the Ninety topples over I know the full safety cage will do what it's there for - to save the passengers of a soft top 90. Here's a link for full age and SD now do a bolt in version of mine that fits a 90 TD5

And here's detail on Paddock page

The roll bar in your link looks just like the standard 1980's military roll bar, there are probably loads of second hand ones knocking about for far less than £546.
They are not massively strong and will only give minimal roll over protection, I would say the minimum that you need in a soft top, probably the same as a hardtop. They are not sufficient for competition, but I don't think that's what you are after.
I would have thought that the biggest difference between a TD5 tub and earlier ones is the location of the fuel filler.
If it is the same as the military bar, the main hoop goes through the body capping and the mounting bracket at the base mounts onto the bulkhead on top of the wheel box. The bracing bars mount on the top of the body capping.

Just wind ya front windows down on warm days :)

When competing in 4x4 trials it used to be ok soft top 2a's to enter as long as the screen was up and the hoops fixed in. The change of screen fixings meant 3's could not.

I thought about a full roll cage but it would involve quite a lot of paperwork over here in Slovakia to have it all 'legal'. I don't do many miles in my defender, really just wanted something to provide a bit of extra protection just in case. The basic soft top roof bars look very thin

Yes, that kind of military roll bar is exactly what I was looking for... but couldn't find one on eBay and wasn't sure where else to look...I am almost certain someone has one somewhere in a shed... I know I have loads of random parts I have accumulated... for instance I have a galvanised series 3 bumper in the garden under some bushes...

I was very lucky that I found someone nearby with a military soft top who wanted to change it, so I swapped my truck cab and ifor Williams canopy for the lot.
