Hi,

Advice needed on my 1985 Defender 90 starting trouble, not all the time just in cold weather. Any nice day she starts fine but a mist at night or cold spell and I have to attach jump leads to a second battery and turn her over, she starts straight away. I have been told the largest possible battery should cure it but I don't want to blow over £100 on something thats unnecessary.
Can anyone offer any advice, has anyone had the same problem and solved it with a bigger battery? Replies welcome.

Sounds like treating the symptoms, rather than the problem. Better if you can find out why it doesn't start, and fix that.

if a cold morning kills it, the battery is on its way out anyway.

I paid £57 for my battery, its the biggest one you can fit in the battery box. Where abouts are you based? Can get you one too.

Oh yeah, don't get it from halfrauds.

Also, mine got sluggish to start, but didnt actually not start. Wass cos the connections were dirty, so the battery provided the current, but most of it went into heating up the poor connection.

dont just look at the size of the battery look at the cold cranking and also the amp hrs of the battery.i have 2 batts in my batery box and although smaller than my original hooge battery they have a higher spec.like boydy said look at the connections aswell sometimes poor contact or bad earth can be a major factor

Hi,

The battery is only 6 months old, all other times it starts fine. I phoned Landranger in Stockport and they do the biggest battery that will fit under the passenger seat for £95 + vat (the one on now cost, like yours £57). It's not totally dead just sluggish when you know it's just not going to start, like I said with the second battery on it starts straight away, just needed that little bit more then once started it's fine even after leaving all day at work, come the evening and it starts ok.

The physically biggest battery int necessarily the most powerful I went for a 90 amp hour with 875 cold cranking amps which was physically smaller than the standard battery but more powerful. But from what you say the problem int with the battery cos it's only a few months old. I'd check yer glow plugs then yer fuel pump.

Will check connections, and what size battery on now. Had the engine rebuilt two years ago, how long do glow plugs last as they were new then so was the fuel pump.

They should be fine. Check the connections. Especially the ones around the starter, the earth strap, main feed, etc. To check them properly, you gotta remove them, clean them with emery cloth, and then use either copper grease or vaseline on the contacts. Also, check where the alternator wire runs to - mine had burnt through on the turbo, and so was making it slow to start, and not charge properly.
