Hey guys,

I have a '97 Dakota v8 2x4 with 90k miles on it. I know it's not a
4x4 but I read this group a lot and wanted to ask this question. Ok
here it goes:

About 1.5 months ago I busted the power steering gear in my truck. I
got a rebuilt steering rack and installed it myself on the truck.
Immediately after putting it on I took it to a good alignment shop and
had the alignment checked. They reported that it was properly aligned
but was having some problems. Here is the problem, as you are driving
sometimes you have to have the wheel turned as much as a quarter of a
turn to the left, sometimes to the right, and sometimes dead on or the
truck drifts. The steering is also loose as it takes a little wheel
turning before the tires actually turn. I can't figure out what is
wrong with it and would appreciate any suggestions. The only thing I
could think of was maybe a lot of air in the fluid. I bled the system
twice and that hasn't helped.

Thanks in advance

There's something loose. Probably a torn rag joint. Reach under the
hood and turn the steering shaft by hand and you can probably spot where
it's loose. Just because the box is rebuild, doesn't mean it's
perfect. Sometimes the rebuilder makes a mistake. Also, check and make
sure all your mounting bolts are tight.
