right, one for the wide/rude boys out there (or just the experienced oldies).

can someone explain the wattage system of car stereo systems? i had a new Sony headunit (GT200 for xmas) which says 4x55w and it sounds great through the xplod speakers. better than my previous 4x35w headunit. i dont actually know what wattage my speakers are but as ive been drawn to this from my improved stereo i was thinking of getting some 6x9 3 ways for the rear.

my question is. what wattage speakers can i realistically get out of my headunit before i waste money on speakers which are too good for my system? (Echo?)

know what im sayin'?

its for my noisy 90 with ill fitting doors and a rattly 2.5 n/a :D

i was toying with an amp and sub idea. but i will just get it wet and ill destroy it.

cheers dudes!

Generally speaking (from my days of Hi-Fi many years ago), speakers should be rated at least 50% higher than the amplifier to avoid damage, more than twice the power and it's diminishing returns.

Other thing to check if possible is the absolute minimum impedance of the speakers. Car speakers are all rated nominally at 4 Ohm, but you can get Infinity's which drop to as low as 1.5 Ohm at about 100Hz (pulling over twice the current than you would expect) which means you need a massive amp to drive them without the amp struggling to supply them and "clipping" the sound waves.
