Why can't I park ????

Out in the Rangie (4.6) yesterday, did about 120 miles with no probs. Parked the car but then couldn't select PARK on the auto box. The lever moves past the reverse position but won't go fully forward into park and the 'reverse' position light stays on on the H gate. I tried in both high and low ranges but have the same problem. It feels like there is something physically stopping the lever.

Is there anything under the H Gate panel which could cause this or should I be looking at the gearbox end.

I tried searching but i seems this problem hasn't cropped up before. Any help/suggestions much appreciated.

i seen this on one of me mates' cars.. it was the end of a pen that had got stuck under the g.lever cover..the bit with the letters on it

quick update,

Took the trim panel off and the 'H' gate but couldn't see anything wrong. After messing for some time I turned the split cotter pin which is used on the pin securing the cable to the gearbox, and everything went back to normal. Couldn't believe something so small was causing the prob, but yes, rotate it again and I loose Park. There is obviously not much clearance around this bit. Don't know what could make a permenant fix so just have to see how it goes. Wish now it had been a pen top like Slob suggested.
