I have a second car, an old long-wheelbase diesel shogun.

I only use it a couple times a week for my scouting activity's where
its bouncing across a field full of camping equipment, towing a canoe
trailer down a muddy river bank or simply transporting kids.

I'm thirty plus, have some no claims discount behind me and I don't
put much mileage on the vehicle but the insurance company's still want
me paying a hundred quid a month for their services.

Does anyone know of a company that would be on my wavelength?

Roadsure - about half the price of others I tried

I'm in my mid twenties and have a missus in early twenties. We have recently
purchased a 4x4 and thus can imagine the difficulties we had insuring. The
cheapest option for us by a mile was Tesco.

I use tesco too. came out miles infront, even compared to the so called 4x4
specialists.

I bet that Teco and the like are OK for your standard 4x4 but give them
something modified and they'll probably have fit.

I'm with Roadsure and having got a quote from them to convert my insurance
from my Niva to the 110 I thought I better own up about the winch. I told
the lady on the 'phone that the 110 is fitted with a Warn 8274 which is quite
a big lump, she told me that she would have to check. That gave me plenty
of time to panic about how much it was going to add to my premium. She
came back and told me that it didn't make the slightest difference, and, yes
I have it in writing that there is a winch installed.

I can imagine a normal insurer chickening out of the deal or hiking the
premium in that situation.

Also agreed. Hence my choice in 4x4.

No-one's mentioned the possibility of a "classic" policy yet. As it's
your second car, if it's 10 years old or more, you might find one of
these your best bet. You don't need to build up a second no-claims
discount, and they often throw in free breakdown cover. The
disadvantages may include limited mileage (though most will cover up to
5-6000 per year), and no business use.

Try Lynbrook (01704 822661), Richardson Hosken (01277 206519), Peter
Best (01621 840400), Footman James, Norton Heritage, and so on. Even
where they offer policies from the same company (often Equity Red Star)
they may have slightly different acceptance criteria or terms - e.g. via
Lynbrook they weren't bothered about the Rangey's lpg or being kept on
the drive, but RH wouldn't touch it. OTOH, RH have insured my Bentley
for 76 quid, comprehensive, with breakdown and recovery, and included
business use.
