Not a band, but what I've had the last couple of times on starting after a full day parked, and again in the morning. Accompanied by rough running and reluctance to rev for a minute or two

Prob been done to death, this.

My guess: heater plug on one or more cylinders not working properly, resulting in unburnt diesel. I realise it might have been developing for a couple of weeks

I can't see that it's related to the other problem of inconsistent power delivery after a few miles, but...

?

here's the theory of white smoke....IMO the worst of all:

White smoke occurs when raw diesel comes through the exhaust completely intact and unburned. Some causes of this include

Faulty or damaged injectors
Incorrect injection timing (could be a worn timing gear or damaged crankshaft keyway).
Low cylinder compression (eg caused by leaking or broken valves, piston ring sticking, cylinder and/or ring wear, or cylinder glaze)

When white smoke occurs at cold start, and then disappears as the engine warms up, the most common causes are fouling deposits around piston rings and/or cylinder glazing.Water entering combustion spaces will also create white smoke. Faulty head gaskets and cracked cylinder heads or blocks are a common cause of water entry, and are often to blame. Unfortunately, expensive mechanical repair is the only proper solution here.

Aagh!

But consider: it doesn't do it if standing for an hour - only if it's been standing for 5 hours (or more).
Unburnt diesel for sure, but wouldn't heater plugs be the first suspect?

Why...do you struggle to start it and it runs rough right after start up? ... anyway, replaceing the plugs would be a good start especially if they are old

Hmm -I guess I'm just hoping.
This has been a regularly-maintained injun. It starts instantly.
But the slight roughness/misfire + whiteSmoke has only occurred 4 times. In the last few days - before that - nothing.

What would be the cause of cylinder glazing?

Most any diesel engine will glaze the cylinder walls if they are run excessivly at low RPM's or idle. AFAIK there are some additives for that,... dig the web

Hmm - that doesn't sound like it - It just ran (in jan) from Valencia in Spain back to uk - not ticking over

It now does 100 miles per day - no traffic jams - up and down the ox - 3, 4,5, whole journey - speeds 30 -70 ( I mean 60, of course)

ps - the whiteSmoke startd after I cleaned the red plug...

somtimes with constant removal of red plug the terminals go slack and may need tightening a little
