Interesting one developed on my 2006 TD5 over the last couple of weeks.
She has been running fantastically for months and generally I've had no issues.
When I start up on the key she fires after just a couple of turns. She will then idle okay. But as soon as I feather the throttle she coughs, splutters and gives me a great puff of thick white smoke.
Only remedy is to "get it out of the way" and rev her a couple of times - all then sorted.
No further issues while driving at all, still going great guns.
But she is doing this every single start-up and I'm sure it's going to **** off the neighbours!

Can't find the same problem elsewhere on the forum, but plenty of smoke issues. Most seem to point to a knackered MAF meter, so unless anyone has any ideas, that's going to get switched for a new one this week. Will update all, but in the meantime will try and post a video, and any comments welcome!

Thanks
Jock

White smoke typically indicates air getting into the fuel lines.
Often the fuel (or return) pipe is split or has come of a spigot somewhere ... can you smell diesel under the bonnet are see and damp patches around the injectors/fuel lines ?

Glow plugs knackered
Or not being powered?

Had exactly the same on my Transit Connect TDCi
Turned out all four glow plugs were U/S.

Shouldn't be noticeable in this weather, you'll only really need glow plugs once it starts getting cold again

Modern stuff can run the glow plugs even after starting to aid cold running combustion.

Op start with the obvious, check all fuel lines, then replace filters, Iirc filter housing could also be an issue?
