Freelander 1 Whistling noise (left of engine)

Hi everyone, I'm new here.

It's been a little while now that there's been a pretty loud whilsting noise coming from somewhere above the front right wheel of my Freelander TD4 (120,000 miles). I'm no mechanic but it sounds like it's coming from the belt area. I'm attaching a video where you can hear the noise quite well. It starts as soon as I turn the engine on and remains throughout.

If somebody could give me any pointers that would great!

Crank pulley delamination would be my guess.

hi, thanks for your answer. i digged up an old thread that has videos of crank pulleys failing and mine does have a similar ticking noise but it's MUCH softer. You can hear a tick but it's very faint. So this could just be the start of it?

replacing it would be a bit of a challenge for a novice like me with no tools, right?

you will need a special tool to hold the pulley, fits over the castellations, and a good socket around 30mm or so and a long breaker bar and a tame gorilla to heave on it as the crank nut is extremely tight,I was unable to move mine and gave up in the end,if you can get the nut off then the pulley will just pull off

how urgent do you reckon this is ? (given that it's made this sound for quite a while already)

Given it's showing the signs of failure, i'd say you want to get it done as soon as you can, as if it fails completely you'll be in a world of pain.

Don't let a garage use an impact wrench on the pulley nut. It will fracture the cast iron crank shaft and scrap the engine.

Thanks. I was the "support" vehicle for a Lands End to John O Groats cycle trip a couple of years ago, and struck it lucky that day on the way to Fort William.
