hi all i have just bought a 1999 freelander xdi ,have noticed when driving there is a loud whining noise coming from what sounds like the rear.i have been told it could be the ird ,it also came with a spare set of wheels with tyres and i noticed on one of the tryes there was uneven wear up and down on the tread.any help would be appreciated ,thanks alex

your probly in the right area with your tyres, I just noticed last week or so that mine started to whine, till i put some air in the front tyres, No more whine!

If the tyres are worn unevenly then they can cause a horendous amount of noise. .
Mine did that, I initially thought the diff was knackered.
Turned out to be the tyres. The tyres had a stepping effect on the tread. I put a new set on and it was quiet as ya likes
