whining freelander

hi everyone i am new to the site. Just purchased my 1998 freelander xedi as a private sale. After driving it home found a loud whining which we thought was just a wheel bearing. However, noted that when it was out of gear it was definately alot quieter. When in gear and driving it is quite loud it appears to be coming from front. Have since been told some horror stories. Am getting it checked this week by landrover anyone got any ideas or had similar problems. Many thanks. Smithy

Check propshaft center bearings, these are common on the early freelander.
