I am looking at purchasing a 4x4 to pull a two horse trailer.

I have the option to purchase one of two vehicles at the moment, please advise which one and why as i have never owned a Land Rover before.

1) W reg Defender 90. Everything runs well except that it needs a new chassis - person wants as close to £500 as he can get for the 90, he said a chassis will go for around £600 although not sure if that is fitted

or

2) C reg Defender 110 Petrol with LPG - needs welding work and rear seal gone as leaking from centre cap on rear wheel - although I think there may be other things that are not being revealed to me. This guy said he wont take less than £1200 and is holding on to it for me for a month so i can find out more about these vehicles.

Personally I like the idea of the V8 (110) and i dont know but may need it if i want to pull two horses?

Please let me know what your thoughts are.

Thank you

David

Yeh I wouldnt go for either, look in autotrader/ebay and you are sure to find one without problems. Any land rover will be able to tow two horses no probs as well, no need to go for a v8 unless you just like the noise!

On the other hand if he's taking HORSES (puke) to the knackery to make good dogmeat and soap. let's be more positive.

Either of those vehicles would be more than capable of towing your horsebox. However both the ones you describe sound like a pile of crap. A chassis for a 90 will cost closer to a grand and you could at least double that if you need someone to rebuild the 90 onto it. Plus there will be innumerable other problems discovered when it gets stripped. That makes the thing pretty worthles as it is, just spares really.
As for the other one you should be able to find a 110 of that age that has an mot and is on the road in working order for not much more than that so again I'd leave well alone. There are some good buys out there if you can take the time to track them down but if you're unsure about what you're looking at take someone with you who has some experience of Land Rovers.

Either of them 2 and you will end up shelling out more than you would on a gudun in the first place.
2 or 300tdi all dependin on ya available dollar.

some peeps rekon the lwb is better for towin, stability wise, though we have no probs with our 90 pulling a 510 ifor.
though with the 110 you will have more room for all the junk wumen need to stick on and around the osses.
our old 200tdi pulled the same trailer+ 2 osses with ease.

Why not opt for a discovery 200 or 300tdi? You can pick up a disco for less than a grand if you look about that will pull the horses. If you can spend around 2k you can pick up one that would be tidy.

Thanks everyone for your responses.

I have looked on ebay and autotrader but didnt find much in the way of 90/110's near a grand that were sound.

Is a disco a good alternative?

Where else can i look please?

Cheers

Hi a disco is a great alternative the 200tdi is a better engine than the ones fitted to 90/110's. and they're a lot more comfortable to drive. But you must be very careful when buying 1, for a grand your going to be looking at a pre 93 model and they do have lots of known problems, Mainly corrosion and knackered, gearboxes. do a search on here and other forum for a list of things to look out for.

Don't buy off Ebay without seeing the vehicle 1st.
Don't let a long MOT fool you into thinking that it must be ok. It most probably won't be.

But to be honest for a grand you're gonna struggle to find any sort of Landy that doesn't need at least another grand spending on it. with the possible exception of an old series II or III.

Mind you, you should see his old pikey computer!
