Apologies if this is in the wrong place or if the question has been asked loads of times before, but....which Land Rover is recommended to meet the following needs:

- towing a small dinghy
- a bit of rough work around some farm land (hauling a trailer, carting logs and stuff)
- ferrying some kids around the place (i.e., seven seater at least probably)
- diesel
- modest amount of self-maintenance

I like the classic look of the series II and III, but am not averse to something more modern (Defender?).

Budget: £2,000.

Am completely new to the idea of owning one and this forum so I am happy to be completely educated.

Thanks.

109 or 110 SW or a Disco 1 would do the job nicely. Not enough seating in a 90 or swb SII or III. Disco would need the jump seats in the boot space. You'll get a lot more disco for your money than defender and it'll be a Tdi instead of a naturally aspirated diesel or a TD.

Mind you, saw a Rangie classic Tdi for £1,650 recently so they're not out of the question either - although the maintenance might not be so easy at home, dunno much about them tbh.

Hope that helps a little,

Thanks, Adz.

Now, forgive my ignorance, but the 109/110 SW is a longish wheelbase Defender station wagon, correct?

Is there a lwb station wagon SII/SIII?

I think I prefer a naturally aspirated one for maintenance purposes. Also no ECUs or other engine management gubbins - the simpler the better.

Get a seven seater Discovery you wont go far wrong, make sure you buy a good un and it will last you ages, what they say about Discos towing caravans is true they are the Bees knees.

Yer... wot sweets said ;)

109 = series
110 = defender
Disco = Boogie on down

:D

Discovery Tdi sound like your best bet.

You're unlikely to get a Defender 110 Tdi (H-reg onwards) for that budget. You'd be looking at a One Ten (pre-Defender) with a normally aspirated 2.5 or a 2.5TD which are a bit asthmatic in a 110.

Cheers

Disco 300tdi for sure! 7 seater with boot seats (ie SE spec) inc. fitted lap belts. Engine pretty well bullet proof if it had regular oil and filter change. Look for recent cam belt change in history. No ecu's to worry about. Make sure you have a good inspection underneath for chassis rust though before buying and may be worth paying that little extra through a reputable dealer to get a limited warranty for that extra peace of mind. After parts market for those and other LR's is very healthy and won't cost you an arm and a leg! Downside is that 300tdi is that bit noisier than TD5 and more sluggish but sounds like your not after a green light burner. Again, for rough stuff you have the low ratio box and diff lock which will get you through most obstacles that are not being utterly ridiculous enough to rip your undercarriage off. Good hunting.
