Hi all,

I have developed a noise on my p reg 300tdi disco which ressembles a wheel bearing on the way out. But what im finding strange is the fact that the noise appears when i turn left, but arfter jacking all the wheels up the only one i can find with the slightest amount of play is the drivers side wheel and it really is a matter of mm's. Could this be bearing or something else?

Many thanks
Buster

whem you turn left more weight is put on drivers side wheel play could be in swivel housing or wheel bearing ,check ,to set wheel bearing adjust nut by hand to just remove free play locking second nut will give a little preload

You can get the familiar bearing noise without having much play at all but although it is a sign they are on there way out it won't fail an mot. If you have to much play or any grinding or crunching noises when you spin the wheels that would fail an mot. It's quite hard on a disco to feel where play is coming from or to exert enough force to find all the play. Getting the wheel an inch off the floor and leaving the bottom of the tire with a long bar can reveal play you can't find by hand.

Wheel bearings are fairly cheap and easy to change so if you can do the work yourself I would just replace them. Better to do it when it suits you than have one collapse when you need the car.

I did the two of mine in under three hours and I spent best part of an hour struggling with rusted caliper bolts which hopefully you won't have.

Thanks for all the help guys much appreciated. Something just dawned on me while sitting hear reading these posts, and that is seem to rember swerving and hitting the kerb the other week, could this have knocked the bearing out?

yeah could well of done - like dyke said i would tighten & see if the noise goes or replace both sides if you are able
