I had to put a new pair of tyres on the front of my Freelander
yesterday. No big problem.

However the guy who changed the tyres said he had experienced problems
balancing after changing the tyre on one side - it did seem to take a
long time and I was watching him in the balancing area of the tyre
bay, and I've now got a shedload of balance weights stuck to one
wheel.

Previously on the wheels I've had the odd single weight applied which
I consider is perfectly normal. But now I've got a farm of weights
clearly visible thru the wheel cutouts - probably about 15 or so
mounted on one point on the wheel.

I'm not trying to worry unnecessarily, and the car drives fine (no
indication of a balancing problem). But does this suggest there might
be a problem with the tyre put on that wheel?

The previous tyres didn't need anything special, so I infer that the
new tyre might be badly manufactured and have a "lump" of rubber on
one side - or maybe I'm just being too cautious.....

I would agree with you, a close inspection (internal/external) of the
rubbery bit is required.

It certainly sounds like there is a problem with that particular tyre.
Have a word with the manager and explain your concerns. It shouldn't
take so many weights to balance a standard road tyre. If you have no
joy and you paid with your credit card get in touch with them, they are
liable if anything goes wrong.

A letter to the tyre maker asking similar questions may be prudent

I've had a similar problem in the past, where the wheel was balanced without
removing the old weights, which the fitter "didn't notice as they were on
the inside rim".

Also check the rubber of course.

hello sorry but you have not said what tyre u have fitted. ie make r they re
moulds, cheep tyres or top of the range? I know re-mounds can be very hard
to balance i have same prob with mine but then again they r goodyear MTR's
and a size of 35"x12.50"x15 :):):):)::):):):):):)):) prob doe snot help :)

it miahgt be worth going somewhere else and asking them to check the balance
of the tyre( i am sure if u ask nice they will do it for free)

I've now taken a photograph of the weights added to my wheel:

Bear in mind that prior to the new tyre being fitted I had probably
just the one small-ish weight on the wheel from the last time the
wheels were balanced.
