hi all -- its been a while i know , but the old girl as been running well until now .
here goes :- just started today a strange noise on running , sounds like it was coming from the engine compartment , but not necessarly the engine , sounded like a another motor or strimmer type noise but still running ok .
then there was a louder noise i carried for a short while but then decided to pull over, so i stopped the engine ie turn ignition off BUT although the engine was turned off ie not running ,there was still this motor type noise still present , sounding really rough , whirring and clattery , in about 3 mins it finally stopped .
now the engine wont start at all , its totally dead , not even turning over , not even a click , almost like it is in drive ( its auto box by the way ).
anyone got any clues what this might be .

thanks in advance

right thanks ratty , thats logical i suppose .

just read these other symptoms mate please.

i went back to it an hour ago , hoping it may start , but still the same , dash lights came on , but noticed the diesal heater plug light did not , checked it was in P ( auto box ) anyway still dead as a dodo , not turning at all .
if it is the starter , how or what could of happened .
there was a horrible clatter of noise like a whirring sound just prior to stopping the engine , but on turning the key off the noise just continued so i jumped out and lifted the bonnet but some thing was still moving , it was dark so could,nt tell what , first i thought turbo had collapsed.
why would it start up or run on for approx 3/4 mins as soon as i turned the engine off

i,ve left the disco about 7 miles away from home on a quite side road , just hope it,ll be ok till morning.

any more info or thoughts please , would it be worth going back to her and removing the battery to get a recharge

if the starter solonoid (heavy duty switch to you) stuck on it would cause the starter to carry on until such a time that the battery power ran down enough to prevent it turning over or the starter burnt out. It is normally the ignition switch that jams in the crank position. You then drive off not realising that your starter motor is still going. The main feed from the battery also goes to the back of the starter.

I would say that the reason the lights will all come on but it will not crank over is cos the starter is burnt out.

Pop the bonnet and sniff (literally) around the starter motor. It will most likely smell kentucky fried.

thinking about it the power in the battery as been dipping abit especially on start up when cold , almost didnt start a few times couple of days ago .
will this effect the running in anyway or just the starting

what do you recommend a new batt and a new starter.

i wonder if i could jump start it to get it home or is that not a good idea.

thanks again

Charge the battery and then drop test it to see if it is any good.

Remove the ignition wire from the starter solonoid. (should prevent it happening again)
Turn the ignition to the second position so that the dash lights come on.
BUMP START. and drive it home.

You could try it If the battery is flat. It wouldn't hurt to try, take a hammer with you and give the starter a few good taps it may spring it in to life. Do you have breakdown cover, even though a bank or insurance? As its early still they shouldn't take too long

Could you tell me what would happen if I were to jump start it off another car?

Am I going to cause any more damage to the rest of my motor?

Any Ideas why this has occured?

If you are gonna do that I would disconnect the ignition feed from the starter and then slacken off one of your battery terminals before you connect your leads. When you are ready to start it then short the main feed to the starter solonoid. If it makes a nasty whining noise or smokes like feck. It's knackered. If it looks like it's gonna catch fire you can pull the terminal off that you slackened off previously. If all is good then tighten it back down. Keep the spanner handy on the way home just in case.

I am going to get recovery out tomorrow when garages open etc, Just really worried that other damage might be done ie flywheel etc!!
Anyone know if that is likely??

If vauxhall astras are anything to go by (they do this for a past time) then the answers no. The only other thing you need to change is the ignition switch. If you know it was definately the solonoid at fault then this is not neccessary. If you are unsure then change it.
