Whats this hole for?

Hi ,On my 2.5 dse 1996 there is a hole 1 inch dia on the left side front of the rocker cover looking from the front which when the engine is running chucks out fumes and has made a horrible mess of engine ,should there be anything in the hole.?

Sounds like you are missing a PCV valve. Positive crankcase ventilation. A breather pipe ehich sends crankcase fumes back into the intake to make it less smelly.

There should be a valve that takes the fumes from there and feeds them into the air intake ducting (the hole in the ducting is close to the hole you mention)
 
Thats correct ,there is a hole in the air intake ducting but it has a blank/bung stuffed in it .
the car seems to run fine at the moment ,any reasons why this this valve would be missing and would it drive better with this valve fitted ?

It should be there, your engine bay would be far cleaner if it was, no oily mess! and it would smell better!
The only reasons I can think of why someone would remove it would be, as the hoses went hard (heat from the engine and age) and it fell to bits, or they were having emmision problems (blue smokey exhaust) and figured if the oily fumes were not feed into the intake it would smoke less?

I have been trying to get hold of one of these valves ,just phoned BMW and was told they would not get involved because the car is a range rover .....................tossers!!....anyway does anyone know where to get hold of these valves ,Land Rover want £76 but are out of stock at the factory would they be cheaper anywhere else.

Have a look on the Vauxhall Omega td, they use the same engine, though I'm not sure if the intake ducting is the same, might be worth a look tho...
 
RESULT!! Picked up a PCV Valve from partsgateway ,it came from Scotland price was £17.50 all in ,£76 new ,it came off a 98 2.5 diesel .
