What's missing from this hole ?

I've got a 89 110 (or were they called Defenders by 89?) that looks to have a sump plug missing from the base of the ermmm not quite sure how to describe it - behind the cooling fan (but lower) and attached to the main engine block.

I've put up an image of it here if it helps as the above description is awfull.

There's a fair amount of oil in that general area but i'm unsure if it's coming from the hole (that looks like it should be plugged)

Any ideas as to what the hole is for?

And those of you that who like visual tests - i've also found a very loose pipe clamp where two different disameter pipes meet running down to just behind the dipstick - what's this pipe carry?

I could do with an exploded diagram of the 19J engine as i'm trying to find the source of the dirty black oil that seems to be spreading out in the engine bay.
 
This is into the timing belt... this would be plugged if you were going to do wading... comes in the wading kits.
 
Thanks, i did suspect as much - but i'm sulking now as i can't clearly identify the source of the leak.

I forgot to include the link to the second image showing the loose pipe clamp which is another potential source but untill i get the whole engine clean again i'm a bit stumped and slightly reluctant to use it.

Thats the same picture, so your saying there is oil blasting everywhere?

Put the engine on and get under it, with a a rag clean up bits and watch for the oil to reappear.
 
The hole is the timing belt cover drain plug hole, and if the oil is coming from there then one or more of the seals have gone inside the cover. The plug for bunging it up is just next to the hole.
 
It does look from the photo as if the rim of the hole has oil on it and that oil is coming from the hole. Try taking the plate with the hole in it off and having a peer inside
 
Just read your post again. The hole is there to let oil out if the seals go, so the timing belt doesn't get contaminated and should only be bunged up if theres a likelyhood of water getting in.

The pipes you mentioned are probably the oil feed or return pipes to the turbo TURBO TURBO wot a marvelous word TUURRBO there I said it again, any old how if the feed clamp was loose it would absolutely rip oil out, and if the return pipe clamp was loose it would **** oil out.

The description was excelent but would have been better if you'd put "type thing" in a couple of times. We don't do poncy words round these parts.

I've only done 500 miles in this 100 since buying it a few weeks ago - the previous owner did an oil change just before i collected it, in fact he told me he'd just started doing the change 10 minutes before i arrived and he'd finished when i get there so i am wondering if he rushed it and just overfilled so what i'm seeing is the overflow.

It's not loosing any oil in fact it's on H right now, more evidence of overfilling?

I'm sorta new here so please excuse my use of "poncy words" - am slightly concerned now as i dont know which word was deemed to be "poncy"

ps it's been called Grunt by SWMBO - no offence to the member also called grunt.
 
It's the drain from the TTTTTUUUUUUURRRRRRBBBBBBBBBBBOOOOOO. You may find that the rubber hose is all big and floppy and the jubilee clips won't nip it up properly, so a new piece of hose will be required.
 
i'd be worried about why he was doing an oil change just before you got there. would you? would grunt? if you're selling a car you wouldn't be doing oil changes on i minutes before it is taken away.

and I'm rather proud to have your landy named after me. You may like to point out to the missus that because I was rather good at Belching I was nicknamed Pig, any how some nob took a dislike to me and called me Grunt, then I was made foreman and the aforementioned nob rechristened me Grunt The ****, which rather amused me.

I'm not sure how i could tell - its chucks out a little grey/white exhaust when it starts but thats it, - it runs as sweet as a sweet thing and seems to pull well.

My first trip in it immediatly after buyimg it was a 150 mile (allmost) flat out non stop journey down the M6 - on the basis that it didnt miss a beat and hasnt done since i'm struggling for clues about the oil.

I assume cleaning the engine bay with a normal water pressure washer isnt a good idea? - i'm quite happy to get it steamed if needed.

It's due an MOT in a couple of weeks so i'll probably take it in somewhere to get it looked at - anyone recommend a good LR aware garage around the stafford/newport/telford area?
 
You'd be loosing water out of your header tank thing and have signs of emmulsification round the inside of your oil filler cap and breather pipe.

I've pressure washed my engine without any problems just make sure the dipstick is pushed in properly and the oil filler plugs on properly, try not to squirt water directly at the alternator or the steering box type thing (water could get past the seals).
 
There's no sign of any emulisfication and i think the seller was just being "a nice bloke" - looking at the MOT certs it'd done less than 2000 miles in 2 years (he had a Disco and a SIII for his daily use) and only had the 110 i brought as a backup.

I will sleep easy now but will keenly await the outcome of it's first trip into the garage for a check over next week.
 
i supose he could have been doing the nice bloke bit . but it would be a world's first for someonre to do an oil change just as you are getting there. shirley if he was gonna do that he'd have done it the night before or before it was advertised. or am i being cynical again.
