Whats happened to this air filter?

serviced the Landy yesterday and this is what the air filter looked like. Any idea why the wavey bands?

Ps what a complete PITA the lower oil filter is.....not looking forward to doing that again in a spring.....

Looks like a while ago. They get wet, eventually dry out but the folds clump together and separate as these have when it dries enough. I'd guess when you drive it again it'll run a little freer and smoother, though it's sometimes not noticeable ..

A tip to help with the oil filter is to put a plastic bag around it after you've freed it enough to turn easily, to catch the oil a bit .. or at least catch a bit of the oil ...

Thanks for confirming on the air filter. Perhaps the airbox lid wasn't fitted 100% last time allowing more moisture in?

Regards the oil filter that's a good tip. Sadly though by the time I stuck a screwdriver through the damned thing to get it to turn it was gushing!!!!

Water ingress.....mine briefly spluttered driving through a torrential downpour.
Later l checked the air filter and it had practically disintegrated.

I keep some old bread bags for oil filter changes,freeing first with a strap wrench.

I see there enough room to get a strap wrench in?

I've just googled them and many look to be quite bulky at the head which makes me wonder if one would fit.

The reviews on the ones with very small heads aren't good suggesting they often snap.

Which one have you got that both fits but doesn't snap?

Had mine for donky's but can't say what make,fits on a 3/8 drive socket set.

chain filter wrench with a 1/2" drive, easy peasey. Good tip with the bag though for the last bit. I usually put a basin underneath and just let the filter and oil fall into it - put an old towel under the basin to catch the splashes.

Good question, works on all the other engines, haven't tried a TD5 - did they put the oil filter somewhere stupid?

I see photos on 'tinterweb of people using a chain wrench on it - not much room, but possible.

It was more to do with dropping the filter into a bowl that I questioned.

Could get messy on a td5.

You can get the proper filter tool which is brilliant, but only fits britpart or genuine filters... strap tools are a good alternative

I’ll admit I’m guilty of using a screwdriver and hammer before, it works well but probably doesn’t do the threads any good.

When you say it's a fiddle Neilly in what way?

I note the chain based products above but I'm not sure the chain will go round the back of the filter properly as there is a protruding nut on the engine which is very close to the filter itself?

Would a rubber strap based product work better for grip? (No sniggering at the back there!!)

I ended up using a screwdriver and hammer but it was messy and difficult to administer becUse there is so little room to swing a hammer in there.

I'm going to change the oil every few months now so hopefully the filter will just turn if i look at it but nevertheless I'm up for making life easier if I can.
