Will probably be replacing my tyres before winter...

Would like some good town and country ones with decent off-road ability, as I do a lot of semi-serious off roading.

My wheels are 16 inch rims.

What can anyone reccomend and how wide and big can I go with the tyres before it affects the handling too badly?

We run road tyres on one and BFG ATs on the other. The BFGs have good on road manners.

Beware, though, falling into the trap of thinking that what is a good tyre choice for Defender/Disco is a good choice for Freelander.

Obviously, the Freelander uses it's traction control rather than having a diff lock. Having "too much grip" from the tyres can impede the system, causing the revs to drop and the car to stall. I know a couple of people who have swapped back to road-biased tyres when off roading.

Personally, I'll stick with the ATs, though I never cease to be amazed what the road-tyred vehicle can get through.

Cheers

Just had 4 Michellens fitted at the local kwick fit, should have been 156.66 each fitted, said to the guy that I had a quote from Cosco for 120.00 each fitted etc.

They agreed to match under there price match plan and didnt ask to see

(costo only do michellen)

anyway saved 100, or six months tax

Tedshred - you use my method! I usually play National Tyres and Charlie Browns off against each other as they both advertise they beat any price. Got my back box down from £130 to £45 fitted. Just keep knocking off a fiver in between calls....

Im running with Hankooks at the mo. 215 x 65 R16's. From a local tyre place. Should have been £85ea + fitting and bal, but got all 4 for £300 fitted and bal. Changed from Wranglers and immediately noticed more sidewall wobble with the Hankooks but they are surprisingly ok off road. Have been considering a second set of boots for off roading and been looking at MT's but if they interfere with the traction I'll probably be better looking at AT's

just had 4 Goodyear Allweather fitted (standard fit on new) and noticed considerable reduction in road noise. Dont do much off-road till winter (kayaking) but seem to be good.

When it came time to change tyres after I'd had the car a while I remembered reading somewhere that the Goodyear Wranglers which were already on the car were the best choice by far and so thats what I did.
Was it the right choice? I get mine through Black Circle at 89 quid fitted. Is this a fair price and are these the best for general road use?
