Hi all,

I recently borrowed a mate's 1.8 (Y plate) Freelander while my own was being shipped back from abroad.
I borrowed it on the understanding that I would have it serviced and sort out the VCU which needed attention.
So, serviced and awaiting new VCU, I was driving up the A1 when the Head Gasket went on me (What joy, at 10pm and -3C!).
I can't really use it as a donor car as my own one is a TD4, the Gasket repair and inevitable skim will set me back at least £1K with another £500 for the VCU. The car is in reasonable nick otherwise, with 100K on the clock, 8 months tax and MOT. It just seems a little too good to scrap.

Any suggestions willingly received?

Cheers

It's a shame it didn't develop a fuel leak and catch fire then you could have claimed on the insurance. ;)

Or perhaps your 'friend' new the head gasket was weak hence the agreement.

if it didn't cook the engine when the gasket went, just have a new mls gasket fitted and do not skim it, if the gasket goes again fairly quickly the chances are it has gone beyond a skim to put it right.

As above in Chaser's post but without the burning issues ;) seems Buggered on Bodmin's subliminal spamming of the FL section is rubbing off.

Heads don't need skimmed unless some warrpage (Norwich) is greater than 0.05mm, that's thinner than a RIZZLA paper

£1k is steep for hgf repair in a FL.

Thanks guys,
I left it in the shed, and suggessted to my mate, that he and I broke it for bits, but he had Christmas a coming and binned it for £200, bit of a shame really, tyres alone worth more than that! AND less than I'd paid for the pre-blowup service!....anyhoo, space/time continuum!
What was annoying though (not for me, but for mate) was that the Scrappy, knocked off £20 of the scrappage as no logbook inside the car, AND then he tried to run away with the tax disc (8months to run!). That boy is going to have a half way decent 2001 Freelander with a 100K on sale in some forecourt for around £3K shortly.
Pays to keep your wits about.
