Hi all, with being new to Freelanders, what sort of problems are common and what should I look out for.

I will be getting a 1.8i hardback shortly and was just looking for some advice about the faults that occur. Any advice will be much appriciated. Not like the advice from a few people regarding the petrol version, " don't get one"

You may think by the post that I am a bit paranoid about it breaking down, really I'm not, honest!!!!!!

I just want to know what sort of pitfalls, if any there are about the Freelander. You peeps are definately the ones to ask.

I will be getting a 1.8i hardback shortly - (dont - get a TD4) and was just looking for some advice about the faults that occur. Any advice will be much appriciated. Not like the advice from a few people regarding the petrol version, " don't get one" - so yu had the advice and you are ignoring it!

Oh - and welcome to LooneyZone - yu may become a regular!

LOL many 1.8 owners never have a problem with their head gaskets. The rest of them, though, are here on this forum!

The main problem specific to the 1.8 is head gasket failure. Do a search of the Freelander forum for more info. Basically, watch the oil and water levels like a hawk.

Other issues that affected the Freelander generally include VCU problems, lkeading to failures elsewhere in the drivetrain and a leaky rear dor seal. These tend to affect the earlier models. All are listed in great detail in the Freelander forum.

Freelanders are fun, capable cars ... enjoy.

Cheers

Blippie

Thanks Mad Hat Man, you really cheered me up with that LOL.
Blippie, the leaking door seal is the least of my worries as I am living in Malta and we dont get that much rain, the head gasket though Mmmmmm!!!!!!

By the way Mad Hat Man, yesterday you asked me which model I had got, Well it's metalic Red just like the pics of THE BEAST in the Freelander gallery.
Mine has the roof rails though, same wheels nudge bars with leather interior.

Cheers Guys

i forgot to mention the good news - there's a great bunch of guys on this forum and will help yu lots (take the michael too).

its a RED one - Blippie - yu gonna tell him - or shall i leave it to Slob?;)

I assume they are called Gaylanders because they are more like a hairdressers car, or is it because it's not a manly offroader with proper capabilities!!!!!!!!

The colour didnt mean much to me, although the purple ones look OK, and the Aqua Blue and the !!!!!!

I got it because of the right reasons, if there are any. Good service history, excelent condition, absolutely loaded with extras and of course the price was right.

Sorry gonna show my ignorance here, what's a Hippo?

If I put go faster stripes on my RED Gaylander will it go up hills any faster??????

1) a freelander is usually owned by hairdressers - so "gaylander".
2) if yu look at the front of it it looks like a "Hippo".
3) most are crap - so are called "Hippoos"

sumtimes also known as "freebies", "that pile of ****", a "pretend landrover" and even more rarely as "cuddles", "sweetie" and other similar names.

and yes - i did own one!
