What is this switch?

Hi Everyone,

I have just bought a Land Rover Series 3 1979, 2.25 Petrol. I had to change the thermostat and noticed there is a switch on the right of the thermostat that is not connected. It goes into the cylinder block. I had thought it was the temperature gauge sender unit, but that is located on the left.

Does anyone know what this switch is for and why is it not wired up?
